It's blue, because that's the color your skin will turn if you go outside uncovered for any length of time. Seriously, it's brutal. I woke up this morning to -13F temps. Officially at O'Hare, today's high was +1F. That's it. That's the coldest New Year's Day on record; the previous was 5F in 1969, I believe. They've been talking about it for a couple of days that we could tie the record, but I don't know that it was expected to break quite like that. Our weather gauge got up to 14F or 15F, and when I went to start my car for a bit, it read 10F. But we've been back below zero since about 4 or 4:30, so we'll see how low we get overnight. It's not going to get much better than this until the weekend. I have plans both days.
Meanwhile, my family may not have officially stayed up last night, but we were all up around midnight to sweep 2017 under the rug. Okay, I mean, not all of it was bad, and some parts were pretty good, but some parts were confusing and some, I don't want to talk about. Bleah. Someone in the neighborhood started shooting off fireworks shortly before midnight, and I heard my mom walking around; dad said he was awake, too. Mom asked if I was watching any of the local coverage. I started to, but it was so awful that I couldn't bear to keep it on for more than a few minutes, and instead I found the FXX Simpsons marathon and got to see the Mr. Plow and monorail episodes instead. I still get that Mr. Plow jingle stuck in my head sometimes, like at this time of year. Better, I hadn't done The Music Man yet when the monorail episode first aired, so I had to laugh at all the blatant references I missed the first time around.
It was nice to have a day off to putter around the house. As usual, I didn't get nearly enough done as I should have, but I cleared up some of the piles in my room, plus I uploaded pictures to camp's official website. That is a total exercise in frustration, but it happened and now that's done. I may still get something or other done tonight, but I'm tired and I have to go to work in the morning…and leave early to let my car warm up. Ugh. This weather is why we shouldn't complain when it's 90F outside. It's just balancing things out, and I prefer the warmth.
