In my opinion, profit should never be a criteria in healthcare. It is a service, not an industry.
The problem is that now that it's a billion-dollar industry, there is too much money at stake for the people in charge to say, "Oh yes. Healthcare is a right of every citizen. Here's your millions in premiums back!"
I say ban insurance. It's just gambling. If there was no insurance (including malpractice insurance), there would be lower costs. Doctors wouldn't have to charge as much. Hospitals wouldn't have to charge as much. And people could actually be able to afford care.
Or, you know, make it part of our benefits as citizens. Have a government ID? Present it to the hospital and get healthcare. And because it will be a non-profit service, the tax burden would be small.
Hospitals and Post Offices. Two "businesses" that should have very little worry at all about turning a profit. They should be efficient, but they should not be trying to strain funds out of their respective systems in order to give them to unrelated management/owner types.
US "healthcare had had severe problems long before Obamacare was signed into law.
