I just wasted a half hour of my life trying to explain to a gentleman on G+ that he should put the blame for ObamaCare squarely where it belonged: on its creator Mitt Romney ( Read more... )

OMFG "government ID"
{flails like a muppet}

Just kidding. I've always supported access to health care. And like so many others, blame HMOs and insurance companies for the costs. But I also blame the doctors and the patients.

Docs overbook so they can maximize their profits. Patient doesn't show up, but they can still get billed cuz on page 872, p637, sec989 says so. And even if you do show up, you pay $350 for your 5.75 minutes with your doctor or more likely with the nurse practitioner cuz the doc is busy figuring out how to fight the malpractice suit lodged by the fat dude who was told "you're morbidly obese, diet or die."

Patients will run to the emergency room cuz trying to see their doctor can take 6 weeks cuz they're booked solid. And anyway, if they go to the ER for that ear infection, the ER doc will give them a day or three of antibiotics which they don't have to pay for and won't bother getting the prescription filled cuz the pain stopped two days later and they can always go back to the ER, right?

Over here in Australia, it costs me $60 to see my doctor. And I get $35 of that back at the end of the year. And there are a bajillion doctors offices I can go to at the same cost. And if I go to the ER, I can go to the public hospital and wait in line & it's covered. Or I can go to the private hospital where there's probably no line, but I pay $300 out of pocket and get a large chunk of that back at the end of the year.

Health care should not be a privilege. And it shouldn't be so damned expensive. But when we sue because a doctor told us we're fat, we should be able to see why it costs so much.
