Log Cabin square

I put together a log cabin square while Anne was napping. I think I like the color arrangement, I'm using only left overs from the last few quilts I've done. Traditionally, the middle square in a log cabin is red for the hearth, and I've used a mauve fabric. The "hearth" is off center, but I need the darker half to be dominant for it to line up ( Read more... )

Always wondered why red was the center block in most log cabins. I started processing my scraps for a scrappy log cabin. I happily away to see how yours turns out.

The log cabin block is a lot of fun, and after looking at a bunch of variations on sets of them as quilts, I found a non-traditional formation in a star. The more common sets are furrows, barn-raising (looks like trip around the world), sunshine and shadows. I'll post a drawing of the variation I'm working on sometime.
