My friends/family often ask me how to get the best rate at a hotel and ask me to make reservations for them because I apparently have mystical hotel voodoo and can get people rooms or whatever. Anyway, I tell them exactly what your post is saying: be nice, friendly, patient, and, hell, maybe crack a joke or two and the FD or reservations person will love you and may just give you money off, like you did for this guy.

I am often so shocked by a please and a thank you I am ready to throw in my first born with the reservation :D

Seriously - be nice, be polite - it is all it takes. Don't demand. It is so easy, right?
