I gotta get out of this place ...

Hello, I'm going insane.

I think it's because I haven't really left the apartment in three days (which my brain is sure was really only two days -- the first warning sign). Not helping is the fact that, out of all of the "jobs" that I looked at on my local Craigslist today, I think maybe two of them might be legit ( Read more... )

This was a great great great idea -- thank you.

Incidentally, while walking on St. Mark's Place, I passed by Anthony Aiden Opticians. I figured I'd duck in and see if they sold eyeglass cases, since my (cheap, plastic, but adorable) sunglasses are getting beat to hell in my bag.

The guy pulls one out and makes sure my giant glasses will fit. I ask how much, he asks when my birthday is, I say November, and then he gives me the case for free.

I wasn't expecting that, and it was so nice, I wanted to give them a shout out on my LJ.

Unless they've changed something radically, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (at 82th St. and 5th Ave.) has only a "recommended" donation. They'd like you to donate $20, but won't turn you away even if you put a couple of bucks into the kitty-- in fact, given the number of starving artists in NYC, they sort of expect it if you're scruffy looking enough. You can spend a week in there and not see everything. And it's blissfully air conditioned. The Museum of Natural History is also a "recommended" donation. (79th and Central Park West ( ... )

newyorkers is a notoriously mean-mouthed community. Beware of asking for help there.

Well, they're great if you can give them something specific. I've never been snarked for asking about about a specific place, or issue. But "What should I do in New York?" is the #1 question that gets people yelled at.

I've seen snarkiness over other issues there, too.

Two suggestions: I used to love riding the Staten Island Ferry. Pretty much the same beautiful view of the beautiful harbor you'd get on a pricey tourist boat, but it's FREE. (I think it still is...it's dirt cheap if it isn't, anyway.) You don't have to get off at Staten Island, just stay on and ride it round-trip.

I also love the Lower East Side Tenement Musuem. Their web site seems to be down right now, but it's www.tenement.org

Speaking of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum ... hopita July 24 2010, 23:53:59 UTC
I ended up going down to the East Village and mostly just walking around. I stopped into the 4th Street Food Co-op and picked up a (complimentary) copy of Edible Manhattan. Of all the random coincidences, inside, there was an article about a new book, 97 Orchard, about the people who used to live in the building where the museum is now housed (and, specifically, about the foods that they ate).

Also, I stopped into Lower East Side Books and ended up buying one of Poppy's books. It was one of those days where things kept popping up to make me think of you. :)
