Jacob.

Jacob's at the vet. He's been peeing blood for a while now. I've been a bad cat mama and have not gotten him to the vet sooner. In my defense, it took me a while to figure out which of my three boys was the culprit, but that was only part of the delay. The rest was the combination of my crappy schedule, laziness, and straight up fear ( Read more... )

I don't want to freak you out prematurely but to just prepare you. My boy cat Rudy started peeing blood when we were living in Maryland and it turns out he had a wicked case of cystitis (crystals in the bladder and urinary tract) and needed emergency surgery. This is a very common condition in male cats. Has Jacob been spending more time in the litter box than usual? That was the sign that I ignored with Rudy that lead to his condition being very severe. I just thought he was being weird and hanging out in the litter box for no reason. Turns out he was having trouble peeing because of the blockage the crystals were causing.

Anyway, Rudy had his surgery and now he eats prescription cat food and drinks distilled water and other than that he's totally healthy. He recovered quickly, even though he's FIV+, and that was that. So it is totally treatable with surgery and preventable with different food and water. But it sucked because it was expensive.

But I hope that Jacob just has a UTI or something. I'm sending good kitty thoughts his

I honestly don't know what to think.

They said if I hadn't heard from them by 2:30, that I should call. I'm really just online checking email now; I plan to log off and call in a few minutes.

It doesn't seem like he's been spending an inordinate amount of time in the litter box, but, then again, with three boys, it's kind of hard to keep track. He's always been a butt dragger (you know -- one of those guys who uses the carpet as toilet paper), but who knows if that means anything or not.

The only reason I ever figured out it was him was that I caught him spraying the side of the toilet one day, and it was pink.

You cat is a butt dragger? oh ick! I always though that if an animal dragged it butt alot that that meant it had worms? I'm sure I heard that somewhere, couldn't tell you if it was a reliable truth or not though.

Fingers crossed that Jacob just has a small problem that can be cured with some kitty meds and doesn't need any spendy surgery or anything.

Butt dragging in both cats and dogs can also be a sign of anal gland issues. Sometimes it's worms but usually it's anal glands. Not a pleasant subject, but there it is.
