I have just discovered that people actually use the phrase 'was stood' in real life, as in "I was stood by the door.'

So, so weird. At least that explains why it keeps cropping up in fic.

I read somewhere, though I can't remember the source, that Appalachian regional speech, because of the cloistered nature of culture in the valleys, keeps some remnants of Elizabethan patois but don't quote me!

Today I saw the sentence 'he was bent over the computer,' which actually works.

So basically the English language is completely nonsensical and full of meaningless arbitrary rules...but we kinda already knew that, I guess...

Well, yes, that's why I love it. And "was standing" would be correct without a second party getting involved.
