This is awesome!! The contrast between the brothers back in the beginning and later on is a horrifying, amazing thing.

Very cool read!

It really, really is--but we love it! I mean, given a choice, I'll always prefer the later version of the boys all the way, but it's also really hard not to imagine how much their earlier selves would freak out if they knew how they turned out. Yipe!

Thanks for reading! So pleased you enjoyed this. I know it was a blast to write. ;)

omg, yes~! I love this more than life itself. I've wanted to read a fic like this for years and this is the first time I've come across one that's been true to the characters and compelling enough to finish reading. It was truly a pleasure to read. Thank you for posting!

I would love to see more fics on this theme--I honestly feel like in a lot of ways the later versions of S&D are different characters than their earlier incarnations (though I guess that's true of all s1 versions of any characters in any shows...). There's so much room for exploration and screwing with our boys' heads, which is bread and butter to most of this fandom. :D

Glad you enjoyed this, and that I have scratched that particular itch! Thank you so much for your kind words!

Oh wow, this is indeed creepy, but SO accurate it hurts. Sam and Dean and the Sam from back then and, OMG my head is spinning. Also, it's eerie how much this does feel like 5.04 while at the same time totally doesn't.

Some gems:

Sam’s seen this expression on his brother’s face before, but not like this. Dean’s face threatens. This one promises.
CHILLY.

Dean is restless energy and barely-contained mayhem, joy in all things sensuous, a wild combination of violence and glee. This thing sits as still as a dead man, a half-empty beer bottle propped on one knee, its eyes hooded and considering.
THIS. Both of it just hits the nail on the head, and it HURTS.

“You don’t know, yet. You…you just ditched Dean to do the job by himself. You actually…you left. You actually left.” He stares like he can’t believe what he’s seeing, like Sam’s some kind of creature with a mind so alien he can’t begin to process its motivations.I love that this Sam (our current Sam) just can't fathom that there had been a time when he'd put anything before staying ( ... )

I love that this Sam (our current Sam) just can't fathom that there had been a time when he'd put anything before staying by Dean's side. That makes my heart leap for so many reasons, good and bad and SAM. ♥When I was re-watching that scene, after not having looked at it for...well, a long while, my main response to it was "whaaa...?" It was so hard for me to reconcile Sam just walking away from Dean with any later Sam (who wasn't out of his head on demon blood, anyway). I can only really imagine him doing it at this point out of some misguided 'for Dean's own good' line of thinking, and that ends well for nobody. (But makes for good, angsty fic ( ... )

Whoah. This was so fucking awesome. It was so insightful and the characterization of every single character was just flawless. I honestly feel like I understand Sam's character better after reading this.

I really liked how you portrayed Dean and Cas's interactions. Their 'profound bond' was visible without it being romantic, which is something I rarely see in fic.

Also- I was looking at your profile and I saw you like The Gaslight Anthem! That makes me very happy, they're one of my favorite bands.

Y'know, after writing this, I think I maybe understand Sam a little better now, myself. Which pleases me, since after s4 especially it's been tough for me to warm up to him and at times I still kinda experience the residual urge to smack him, even if he's not doing anything. So maybe now I'm over that. *hopes*

I actually toyed with the idea of sticking some very, very small slashy subtext in with Sam's observations of Dean and Castiel, but ultimately it would've been silly in this context. Glad the 'bond' thing came across and worked well for you. I like slash as much as the next gal, but it doesn't mean there aren't other ways to explore a relationship.

And yup! I do like GA, they're definitely one of those groups whose music I always like, even on the first listen. ;) Hello fellow fan!

This is completely amazing! The careful distinctions you made between now-boys and future-boys as seen through season one Sam is just so spot-on perfect that I am stunned by the comparison!

This is one of the best stories I think I've read in terms of the characteriztions!

Wow, thanks so much! This was a lot of characterizations to juggle, way more than I usually have to deal with, so it means a lot to hear that it worked so well for you. <3 Glad you enjoyed it!
