Characters: Sumire Takahana and YOU Setting/Location: Balcony of the Caravan Date & Time: Day 1, morning Warnings: none Summary: Sumire wakes up early and decides to explore the Caravan. Come join her!
Since he no longer slept, he hadn't really seen the point of spending the night in his assigned room -- especially since he doubted his assigned roommate would be particularly comforted by an undead roommate with glowing orange eyes. So, instead, he'd spent the night wandering the halls of the caravan, finally settling into an unobtrusive corner of the balcony a few hours before dawn.
He glanced up as the unfamiliar girl moved to the railing, and smiled thinly when he overheard her words. "They aren't."
"I've never worked in a library, but I've worked in a clothing store, so I have some experience that could help." Sumire had worried she would have little to do, as she didn't have the skills to volunteer as a cook, nurse, or defender, but her hopes had certainly been raised now.
He nodded. "It seems pretty straightforward, if you've kept track of inventory before. Besides, I'm sure part of it is just being good with people, and you seem like you'd be good at that."
An awkward smile came upon her lips. "I try my best. I've, uh, had to deal with some pretty interesting people before." Her awkward smile softened into a more genuine one. "I don't think this will be too difficult, though."
"Experience with 'interesting people' is probably going to be a benefit. It seems like there are a lot of them on the caravan." He had quite a bit of experience with 'interesting' people himself -- not to mention probably qualifying as one himself.
"Ah, of course." She had already met a few interesting people here (present company could likely have been included), and they seemed easy to let along with, fortunately.
"Um, what about you? Have you done something like this before?"
"Not really." At least, not that he remembered. He shrugged and leaned back against the balcony railing, propping his elbows on it. "Back home I help Hanna. He's a paranormal investigator, and I'm sort of his sidekick."
He nodded, grateful that he could say yes. "He is. So are two of our . . ." He paused thoughtfully, not entirely sure of the best way to describe Conrad and Veser. "Two of the people we know from previous cases. I'm not sure why, but it seems some people were pulled through with other people they know instead of alone." He cocked his head. "What about you?"
"No, I came alone. I've met people from the same country as me, but that's about it." She felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she tried to not let the envy show on her face. "It all seems random, and some people just ended up luckier than others."
He nodded, feeling a twinge of sympathy. He'd spent most of his strange afterlife on his own; loneliness was something he understood, and the thought of having landed in this strange new world without any companions wasn't a pleasant one. "I'm sorry."
"Oh, u-um, you don't have any reason to apologize! It's not your fault!" A wide smile came upon her lips. "And besides, if we get a library going, we'll get to meet a bunch of new people!"
"We'll get home eventually, so there's no need to worry about that at least," she said, chuckling. "But I'm going to have a lot to explain when I get home."
"Almost everyone here will." Himself not among them, since the only person liable to notice his absence had been pulled along with him. He glanced down at her. "I'm guessing you're a student?"
"Yeah, I was just about to start high school." She let out a sigh. "It won't be the first time I've had to make up a lot of work due to missing school, but it's no fun."
He glanced up as the unfamiliar girl moved to the railing, and smiled thinly when he overheard her words. "They aren't."
