Characters: Sumire Takahana and YOU Setting/Location: Balcony of the Caravan Date & Time: Day 1, morning Warnings: none Summary: Sumire wakes up early and decides to explore the Caravan. Come join her!
Since he no longer slept, he hadn't really seen the point of spending the night in his assigned room -- especially since he doubted his assigned roommate would be particularly comforted by an undead roommate with glowing orange eyes. So, instead, he'd spent the night wandering the halls of the caravan, finally settling into an unobtrusive corner of the balcony a few hours before dawn.
He glanced up as the unfamiliar girl moved to the railing, and smiled thinly when he overheard her words. "They aren't."
"No, I don't suppose it would be. Of course, for all we know time is passing differently back on earth -- or not passing at all." He frowned thoughtfully.
"Huh? You mean it could be like that we were never gone? Well, if that witch can send us home, maybe she can send us back to the point when we disappeared." She let out a sigh of relief. "I hope that's the case."
"Anything's possible." He said kindly. Of course, it was equally possible that time was still passing back home, or even passing more quickly -- but there didn't seem to be any sense in pointing that out. "Besides, we may find a way home before the Caravan gets to Loophole. You never know."
Sumire was aware that either possibility was equality likely, but she didn't want to spend the entire trip stressing out about something beyond her control, and the mere possibility that she wouldn't miss much time in her own world was almost good enough for her.
"Oh, I guess that's possible," she replied. "Maybe it'll be as sudden as it was arriving here."
"Maybe. Magic is unpredictable stuff -- if it was magic that brought us here." He shrugged one shoulder. "Actually, whatever did bring us here was clearly unpredictable either way."
"Magic seems to be likeliest explanation, or something else supernatural." She leaned her head back to look up at the sky. "If the whole point of this journey is to send us home, why were we brought here in the first place?"
"I don't know." He frowned faintly, drumming the gloved fingertips of one hand against the railing. "Unless there are some other motivations we haven't learned about yet. The whole arrangement with the Caravan and the journey seems a little tidy for our coming here to have been a random accident."
"They must've seen us coming, somehow," she mused, crossing her arms over her chest. "They're not lying about taking us home, according to that one network post. But still..." A number of horrible mental images invaded her mind. "I really hope this isn't part of some creepy cult initiation or anything like that!"
"That would be pretty bad." He smiled thinly, trying to sound reassuring. "This seems like an awful lot of work to go through for simple recruiting purposes, though."
"I really hope they're not lulling into a false sense of security with all this comfort." She shook her head slightly. "I'm getting too paranoid. I should be more optimistic."
"It can't hurt to be a little of both," He replied. "We can hope for the best, but be ready for something to go wrong. If worst comes to worst, there are a lot of people on board who seem to have experience with unpleasant situations. I'm sure we'll manage."
"Right, of course," she said, smiling awkwardly. "I know I'm not as strong as some of the other people here, but I can still help out if something goes horribly wrong."
"And if it does, I'm sure everyone's help will be important." He craned his neck, looking up at the towers of the Caravan. "Until then, no need to worry too much about it, I'd think."
"Exactly. We've got a long trip ahead of us, if the Way-Warrant is right; might as well enjoy it while things are calm." Especially since, if his and Hanna's recent luck held, they wouldn't remain calm forever.
He glanced up as the unfamiliar girl moved to the railing, and smiled thinly when he overheard her words. "They aren't."
