Gravelings, Why Must there Always be Gravelings?

May 27, 2007 20:57

Or for that matter, why must there always be dudes lifting a giant piano while a completely oblivious lady-with-baby-carriage just needs to walk under it? Why was she so dumb? It's 1913 for crying out loud, she's not even listening to her iPod! No excuse to be so completely clueless in 1913, lady. And when they started hoisting that piano, the ( Read more... )

Okay, Martha knows TV CPR, which is sooo not the same as the real thing. For one thing, real CPR tends to crack ribs ( ... )

What about all those Classic Who people who are totally against the idea that the Doctor should have anything BUT a platonic relationship with his companions? You're always gonna have complainers, and they're usually louder than those of us who aren't.
Ok, I'm gonna go right out and say it, to me these are two different shows, and whoever thinks the old one is better has no right watching television nowadays. Seriously, this is my opinion, and I really don't get how people can like the old Who or the old BSG and not care for the new and much much MUCH improved versions. Again, my opinion, but still. The old stuff is nostalgic or whatever, but I didn't grow up with it, so to me it's just backstory that sometimes gets adapted into newer better episodes.

kinda like how I like Buffy/Angel, but the Buffy/Spike came along and I liked that tooAh, I'm so glad you brought this up. See, to me this is the best example there is. I was whatever to Buffy/Angel, but I LOVED Buffy/Spike. And it was a pleasure seeing that arc of Buffy having actual ( ... )

The wonderful thing about Doctor Who is that it's always changing. Sure, we lump all of the stuff before New Who into the "Classic" category, but if you take a look at the show, it changed considerably every decade, if not with every new incarnation of the Doctor. Now people who like old BSG and don't like or can't even APPRECIATE the awesomeness that is the new one are just being stubborn. ;)

Speakng of Buffy, you have Season 8 Vol. #3 right? o_O Buffy's got a dirty mind, no?

Heh. So say we all! :D There needs to be a lady Doctor next. Or at least his last regeneration should be into Claudia Black.

Aw man, I totally have not read it yet. *shame* The last I left off was her wanting s-e-x. Hee! And apparently dreamin' about Xander.

Word, to like, all of it. I know it's much easier for me, since I have no attachment to Ten/Rose whatsoever, but there needs to be a much greater fandom tolerance.

I'm just watching "Daleks in Manhattan" now and wrote this: I love Martha and Rose to bits, but while Rose was believably clueless for expositions sake, Martha zigs from bright and smart to completely dense. There's a time and a place for comparisons, and another for enjoying change.

Word to your word. ;) But I did ship Ten/Rose and like you said, most of the fandom just refuses to accept the change. *shrug*

Gak! Why did you have to go and say the line-that-shall-not-be-named??? "You fell in love with another human...and not me"). *shudder*

She DOES get somewhat irritating when she acts like she still hasn't gotten it yet that Ten isn't romantically interested in her
But see, this is the whole Buffy/Spike thing happening. If she got that he wasn't interested in her, she'd go away? She'd turn it off just like that? See, she won't give up because she's still interested in him and that's her arc since the first episode. She will get him. Even if it will take years and years. Or until they get a new companion, lol!

I just really don't want him to start loving her romantically. It's nothing against Martha it's just...RTD said Martha's story is about unrequited love, and it would just make Doctor/Rose trashy and no longer so special if he fell in love with Martha too. Plus it's more realistic for him to not be romantically interested in every woman that travels with him. You're making perfect sense. And it's kinda the Stargate thing that I was ( ... )

I just get irritated at stupid lines like "Sometimes I think he likes me, but, other times I just think he needs someone."
Ok, again, you're pointing out something that I personally despise beyond all things, which is the whole say subtext as text thing. Hate it!

I have no idea where she gets the idea he likes her like that when he's been mourning Rose. Just...sort of stuff like that. I'm not bashing her for having hope and holding on, I just don't like it when she acts blind to the fact that he's been talking about Rose and getting over having lost her, and getting upset whenever he mentions Rose. You know?
Hmm, well I'm gonna have to side with Martha on this one. ;) First of all she has no idea about Rose besides the fact that she was his old girlfriend (that's what Martha thinks, I don't care if it wasn't blatantly said on the show). She has no clue what happened in Doomsday and all that. And the Doctor has been giving her signals. I mean he asked her to come with him, he has that tight suit, and he kissed her, and has been very ( ... )

I getcha. I'm personally interested more in the journey that we're seeing on screen now, and the struggle that Martha's facing, hence my fascination with the parallels that you brought up in your vid. And btw, you got that this post was in no way directed at you, right? Cuz it wasn't.

gah! shouldn't have read this post, got spoiled for the new one...

I keep trying to write out a comment... I love Martha and do ship Ten/Martha (multi-shipper) and fandom hating on her for no reason does annoy me a great deal but I won't add anything else to that. I really hate New Who fandom.

For the record none of the new companions are that great compared to some of the old series ones.

Noooes! I didn't spoil you too bad, did I? Just mentioned random things. You'll be fine. Unless you read the crazy comments, in that case yeah, you're screwed. ;)

Multi-shipper here too. *raises hand* But I'm not gonna go into Old Who fandom vs. New Fandom. Mainly because I haven't really seen that much of it, well almost all of it, but I know due to various TV standards and all that, as well as production value differences, it just can't be as good.

I wish the New Who would go as far as BSG did in the re-imagining of the show. I wish it would take more risks than just Jack crushing on the Doc. I wish there were snogs, I wish there was more than that, and I wish the Doctor would regenerate into a woman (Claudia Black, ftw!), at least in the end or something. But that'll never happen so I need to STFU. :D

oh well I don't assume I'm staying spoiler free until the next episode (so i can watch them together) anyway.

I'm such multi-shipper one day I almost wrote up meta about polygamy because it would obviously solve fandoms ship war issue... but thought better of it.

it just can't be as good.I like the writing and variations of stories and companion types more than new who (have you seen any? You should watch Curse of Fenric-- IP/SP and the one with the Sun last week seem a bit copied from it. Well, sometimes I think that's someone on staffs favorite...). you know how often they've repeated stories this year? Old skool did that less. (possibly never, I don't recall but I'm covering my bases-- I've only seen about 15 % or so?) The production values aren't great, but allot of the stories did take place in Europe (present day for the time and in the past) so it wasn't like they were always terrible either ( ... )

I dunno, it's just my own thing. I really haven't seen nearly enough of the old one to make a just opinion, this is simply me being unreasonable I suppose, and just basing my opinion on what I've seen. And to me the romantic interest is most important, and if they were all frolicking around being "just friends" all the time then it's not my bag. But again, it's just me.

In regards to the stories, back then they didn't really have anything to steal homage. It's like BSG now taking stories from the old BSG. I don't have a problem with it. ;)

Yeah, I think they are still trying to keep it a family show. Torchwood (which had almost the same audience anyway) was them trying that, if they did that with DW it would be...not good.I liked the atmosphere of Torchwood but everything else about it failed beyond all failures. And imo they just did the cursing and the sex gratuitously, because they could. And that's just stupid and forced. I say DW should fall in the healthy medium. No cursing, but possibly we can stop referring to sex as ( ... )
