Dear Susan,

I've been to the popcorn room second floor recently, and I did see Logan's name there a couple of days ago. It was a huge shock, as I'd only just talked to Logan at a Sorting a day or two earlier; we'd made tentative plans to get together soon. I kept thinking it must be a mistake, that he'd be back any minute, but that hope is wearing thin with each passing day.

Thank you for the offer of company, I know he was very dear to you as well and for a longer time, and I'll very likely take you up on it soon. (I keep finding myself making mental notes of funny things that crop up at Sortings that I must remember to tell him when I see him.) I know he helped me a great deal, not only in adjusting to Hogwarts but in not feeling so alone with my life's traumas; I only hope I was able to be as much use to him as well, especially when Lilly reappeared in his life. I have to believe he can't stay popcorn foreverCan't say I much miss our Mr. Gin, but I can confirm he hasn't been seen around the dorms at all for almost a month. He ( ... )

Dear Miss P Laura,

Funny you should ask -- about being through this before, that is. Just a scant few days before I found out about Logan, I learned that Stephen's wife, River, had suffered the same fate, and it seems that my friend Psyche did as well -- around the same time as Logan, as far as I can tell. It's all been rather a lot to deal with in one go, and I suppose I'm still slightly in shock about it all. We can only hope that the condition won't last and that when or if he returns, he's at least something like he was before.

I have heard about this Lord Voldemort character; actually, when I first arrived here, there were three of him, apparently from different periods of his life or some such -- don't ask me to explain, I can't. At least there's only one of him now; I should appreciate any interesting information you might uncover about him.

In any case, thank you for your kind words, and I should certainly like to talk with you more. I'm easily found, so if you like, contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely,
Susan

(( *waves* I figured it was un-Susan-like to be Indiscreet, so thought I'd pop in and remind that when River told Susan about the marriage status, she did mention that it was A Secret. Only saying so because Stephen is already way paranoid about how much the school knows about his personal life, and if Laura turns up knowing that he and River were married, he may decide she too is a French spy along with Scully ;)

And darn it all, when he gets back from his vacation and finally back to his precious laudanum bottle again, I do need to have him get together with Susan at some point! He's worried about her, of course.))

((d'oh. I forgot -- too much stuff on the brain of late. Laura, read "fiancee" for "wife".))

Susan,

Of course, my time is at your leisure. Opinions, I believe, are among the finest of gifts friends might bestow upon one another. I shall wait for you presently.

Sincerely,

Emma.

After lunch, Susan dropped off some books at the library and made her way up to the room she and Emma shared in Ravenclaw. On the walk up, she turned over the problem of how she might present her situation and her questions to Emma in any way that would make sense -- a difficult enough task, since sometimes it barely seemed to make any sense in her own mind. Important as well was to neither shock nor offend her friend, as that would derail the entire conversation altogether.

By the time she reached her room, she felt that she had a handle on the matter; she took a deep breath, and opened the door.

Emma Woodhouse looked up from the letter she was completing to greet her roommate. The room is well-light and decorative, as always, while the single yellow rose left a distinct feminine touch. She had been finding her studies fascinating, and this led her to slightly disengage from the life of society. Perhaps the Hat was a better judge that one might have first thought.

"Why, hello Susan. Would you like to sit down? I've had an elf warm us up some tea." She smiled, eager to help.

"Thank you, Emma, tea is perfect." Susan put down her things and sat down. "No hurry; finish your letter." She poured out tea and took a sip from her own cup.
