((WARNING: spoilers for all existing episodes of Caprica))

Land on your feet, in a crouch. Amazed. Hands outflung as if in flight. Fold your arms, unfold them, stretch one out before you and study your hand in amazement. Same scarred wrist. Run a finger over the keloid ridge. Reach up to feel your face. The back of your head. Fingers ( Read more... )

"Nope!" Ryuk said while smiling. "That's why I like having a Death Note. No blood necessary, only if you want to."

In V-World, something that looked like this thing would probably not be all too uncommon, Amanda guessed.

"What are you talking about?"

"I kill people. I write their names in my Death Note, then forty seconds later, bam! Dead of a heart attack."

"Cute." Amanda studied her fingernails. Gods, was this really what the holoband had been invented for?

Demyx blinked at a couple of the answers. "O... kay. Obviously you're one of the ones who thinks this is all some weird conspiracy by whoever follows them around and tries to kill them. What I wanna know is, if everyone who thinks that is right, why is the school run by a Furby and a talking hat?"

One of the other answers caught his eye. "You're Greek?"

"A talking hat?" Daniel hadn't lost his sense of whimsy after all. Amanda tried to focus. "Greek? No. I'm a Caprican citizen."

"Um. I'm pretty sure there's nowhere called Capricia or whatever on Earth, so why are you talking about praying to a Greek goddess?"

"If ... Greeks? ... worship the Lords of Kobol, they're welcome to it. That doesn't make me Greek." Amanda folded her arms.

"They can give you food here." Marcus sounded hesitant, like he was unused to talking to strangers and expected Amanda to bite him.

He was a strange juxtaposition of clean and dirty. He wore a clean white oxford and gray slacks, courtesy of whatever being who decided that poor students shouldn't have to go naked. But his face was scruffy, and his right hand was calloused and had dirt permanently caked under the nails, like a mechanic. His left hand was smooth metal.

"You don't have to take it if you don't want it. Or if you can't have it."

"Yeah?" Amanda's eyes went first to the face; she looked everyone straight in the eye. "I think," she said, quietly, "that it's possible to eat, if I wanted to. Thank you."

Only then did her glance catch the metal hand at his side. Naturally, her first thought was of the U87 prototype. She blinked hard.

"Wasn't sure." He caught her looking, but there wasn't much he could do besides walk around with his hands in his pockets. "I don't think anybody cares about the answers."

"The person who wrote the questions cares about the answers," Amanda muttered. But whoever was behind this avatar wasn't to blame for that. Wasn't to blame for the U87 either. She raised her eyes back to his face. "They're bad questions," she said. Her voice was soft. "What about you? What do you care about?"

((SQUEE SQUEE SQUEE YAAAAY))

"Your daughter blew up a train?" Megan's black eyes were perfectly round with surprise. "Wow, that's... I mean, I'm sorry! I really am. That has to suck, for everybody involved. Anyway, who told you that doesn't mean you're not a parent? I mean, my da died but that doesn't mean he's not still a father, you know? I think being a parent has to be kind of like that, once a parent, always a parent. You're just... a parent of someone who's not there anymore?" Suddenly, Megan's common sense caught up with her mouth and she laughed helplessly. "Actually, that's probably a sore subject so I'll drop it. Hi, I'm Megan, and welcome to Hogwarts! It's kind of nice once you get used to all the weirdness."

"Hi, Megan. I'm Amanda Graystone." Her voice was soft and firm. "And I think you're right, and I'm sorry about your father."

"Oh, it's nothing, really. I was just a kid." Which... still wasn't saying much, as she did not look much older than fifteen or sixteen unless drawn by Greg Land, in which case she looks like a twenty-some year old porn star. "I mean, there's been a lot since then, and you can't really look back on it all too much or you go a little crazy, you know? Anyway. Why shouldn't we feed you? Do you have food allergies, because a friend of mine is allergic to peanuts and she had to be really careful about that sort of thing. But I bet the house elves would help you out with that. They're really nice, even if they look weird."

She looked about Zoe's age, to Amanda who would have had a few things to say to Greg Land, and wouldn't Sarno have had a field day with that. To Amanda, Megan was a kid still, and that made her a little sad. No kid should have to know the kind of wisdom Megan had just articulated. "You're right. Looking back can make you crazy." Chasing Darius down hallways, and only some of the hallways were real. "I'm ... not allergic to nuts," Amanda said, and then laughed at herself a little for what she'd actually said. "Even if they look weird."

Wow. Bitter. Codex nearly backed out of the room, but morbid curiosity got the best of her. "I, uh... I wouldn't recommend harassing the dead people," she stammered. "What with the being dead thing and all. I'm, um, pretty sure that question's just there to freak you out. I hope."

There was also that daughter blowing up a train thing, but... that didn't seem like the kind of thing you opened with, even for socially inept MMO addicts. Unless you were a troll. Which Codex was very much not.

Amanda's thin-lipped smile contained little warmth and less humor. "If 'someone's' trying to freak me out, he's not doing a very good job." She was curious about the girl, though. "Have you been here very long?"

"Oh. Well, they freaked me out." She giggled a little, self-consciously. "I'm still pretty freaked out, actually. I, uh, I've been here for a couple of months? Except I don't go out much, so... yeah."

Amanda lowered her face to look at her shoeless feet -- then raised her eyes to look at Codex. "I hear it's a freaky place," she said, quietly.
