((WARNING: spoilers for all existing episodes of Caprica))

Land on your feet, in a crouch. Amazed. Hands outflung as if in flight. Fold your arms, unfold them, stretch one out before you and study your hand in amazement. Same scarred wrist. Run a finger over the keloid ridge. Reach up to feel your face. The back of your head. Fingers ( Read more... )

Demyx blinked at a couple of the answers. "O... kay. Obviously you're one of the ones who thinks this is all some weird conspiracy by whoever follows them around and tries to kill them. What I wanna know is, if everyone who thinks that is right, why is the school run by a Furby and a talking hat?"

One of the other answers caught his eye. "You're Greek?"

"A talking hat?" Daniel hadn't lost his sense of whimsy after all. Amanda tried to focus. "Greek? No. I'm a Caprican citizen."

"Um. I'm pretty sure there's nowhere called Capricia or whatever on Earth, so why are you talking about praying to a Greek goddess?"

"If ... Greeks? ... worship the Lords of Kobol, they're welcome to it. That doesn't make me Greek." Amanda folded her arms.

"... The Lords of where? The gods we're talking about live on Mt. Olympus," Demyx pointed out. This conversation was going nowhere fast.

(( The significance of Olympus in BSG/CAP is ambiguous, so I'm going with one interpretation))

"Olympus, right." Amanda nodded. "On Kobol. The ancestral homeworld of humanity." She gave a humorless laugh. "It's just a myth."

"... Um. Well, one, I'd like to see you say that in front of them, and two, I coulda sworn humans started out on, y'know, Earth. And Mt. Olympus was in Greece - still is, last I heard. It was based on a real mountain, and those don't generally just take off into space." Demyx was seriously confused now.

"Earth's a myth too ..." She squinted at the person -- the avatar -- addressing her. "Are you religious?"

"Not really. Hard to be religious after I actually met the gods. And I was never much that way in the first place - I was a real jerk as a teenager."

"You met the gods."

Well, who knew? There might be gods running around in V-World. If she had somehow slipped out of Daniel's private lab, gotten into Graystone Industries' proprietary virtual space, some playroom or other --

"Which ones?"

"Oh, I've at least seen most of them, usually in passing or from a distance. A few of them have been here, though I dunno how many still are. I think Eris was around causing trouble a while back, but I avoided that mess, thanks."

Eris did not number among the Lords of Kobol; the mention got only a brief and uncomprehending nod from Amanda, a token gesture that meant I heard you and little more. "Sounds like a trip."

"Anyway. Not the point right now; the point is to get you Sorted. Don't pay too much attention to the application, nothin' but the part about the bribe actually makes a whole lot of difference." He sighed. "The Hat's kinda weird. And I mean even for a talking hat it's weird. I don't think its mind works the way a human's does. At least not a sane human."

"Gotcha. What does the Hat like?"

"Usually jewelery, mostly stuff on pins or long chains that it can wear. That or anything about hats - it wanted me to write a song about them, I know that. Flattery works well. It's the most egocentric hat I've ever met."

He shrugged a little. "Oh, think we got off on the wrong foot. The name's Demyx. Nice to meet you, Miz Graystone."

On the Pantheon Bridge she'd left her shoes and her wedding ring, but her earrings she had not thought to remove, nor the gold bracelet she had been wearing. No symbolism to those, and no encumbrance. She had them still.

Hats had neither ears nor wrists. "I don't suppose it's interested in acquiring any new piercings," she said, feeling her earlobes. "I have some experience in dealing with egocentricity. We'll see what happens, I guess. Demyx. It's good to meet you as well. Thank you for the information."
