Miranda's been walking around, enjoying the curry and glowing chinese lanterns.
She reached for a very large bit of cotton- if anyone wants any she'll give them a piece.

"Woo!" Sage called out her approval of the ritual violence against blankets. She ignored Miranda's glare and blew a large handful of cotton in her direction.

Derkhan had been watching the dance. The brochure she had read, once, and then folded neatly to stash in her back pocket. (She planned to write a little review of the festival in Hogwarts Rampant.)

From the brochure she knew what the cotton was for, and recognizing Miranda, she went up to ask for a piece. "Can I borrow some of that?"

"Hey! Certainly." She pulled at the cotton, dropped it, dusted it off and handed a neat little puff to Derkhan. "We're supposed to blow this out over the lake, I think."

True, this wasn't like any of the festivals Mio had ever attended at home, but it was a bit comforting to her.

And after being cooped up in the Sorting Room and then her room (she was still a bit depressed), Mio needed to get out of the castle.

So she was here, in her yukata, picking up some cotton and holding it in her hands.

Mikami didn't take his cotton ball down to the lake straight away, standing and holding it for a moment, lost in thought. Purification. That was what he wanted, wasn't it?

...he didn't think a little ball of cotton like this could hold all he needed to be rid of, though.

Coraline came over to Rika after she'd put the hoe away. "I liked your dance."

"Mii~! Thank you." Moving over to the blankets Rika picks out enough cotton for both of them and offers half to Coraline. "I hope everyone who participated had a lot of fun today."

She took the cotton, with a smile. "Well, I did. And Sunflora did when she got the hang of things. ...and I think the man in the leather shorts did." Beowulf, presumably, since he'd shouted it so often. Coraline had been a little stunned.

"That is good. If I'm still here next year I'll try to have more games for everyone to play." A water balloon fight is good, but now that people know about the festival there can be more games for a potentially bigger audience.

Kusuriyuri had observed many rituals that humans used to rid themselves of those things they found undesirable. Some more complex, a few much simpler. He picked up one of the cotton balls and turned it in his hands. He knew cotton to be absorbent. Is that why it was used for this ceremony? He watched Rika and Ginko and the others who'd gathered, watching on a slightly deeper level than most would be able to see. Would regret truly be drawn to the cotton and float out into the lake? And what would become of it then?

Beowulf knew what would happen to the cotton balls.

"THE MONSTER WILL DEVOUR THEIR SINS," he boomed happily behind Kusuriyuri.

Kusuriyuri turned, his eyes wide. He had not expected to be addressed in quite an exuberant fashion. He looked at the...giant behind him. "Is that so?" he managed to ask, though those who knew him better could hear the surprise in his voice.

"AYE! DID YOU NOT KNOW OF THE MARVELOUS MONSTER THAT DWELLS IN THE LAKE?" Beowulf couldn't think of any other reason why someone would question his assertion. "IT WILL EAT WHAT IS IN THE LAKE. IT IS A PEACEABLE CREATURE WHICH PARTAKES NOT OF MANFLESH." Alas. "THESE BITS OF FLUFF IT WILL SURELY IMBIBE. SINCE IT IS A MONSTER, IT WILL TAKE NO HARM FROM THEM. HA! IT WILL THRIVE ON THE WICKEDNESS AND GROW MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER BEFORE!"
