Silmeria's Game (Open RP)

Jan 14, 2009 22:28

Silmeria sat in the Great Hall, arms crossed and frowning at a chessboard in the midst of a game. Several minutes passed before finally moving a piece and then turning the board around to play continue playing the other side.  Ever since learning about the game, she had spent time practicing with the set she asked a house elf to bring to her ( Read more... )

"Chess? Need an opponent?"

Silmeria looked up. A relatively normal-looking man.

"It would be helpful, yes. Do you wish to fulfill that role?"

"Why not? Nothing else to do here." Caron sat down across from Silmeria. "I can use the distraction."

Silmeria removed the pieces from the board and began arranged her side in the starting position.

"What do you wish to be distracted from, Sir...?"

Wishbone dragged in one of his Christmas books to read. Sometimes you just wanted to have something to eat while reading.

He got a very indulgent house elf to help him get his book on the table, and some turkey to nosh on.

In his eagerness to read and eat, he didn't notice his wagging tail knocking over some chess pieces.

The sudden downfall of half her army effectively broke her concentration. She glared at the small dog and moved the board out of range of his tail.

"If Lezard sprouted you to annoy me, you've succeeded," she muttered as she arranged the pieces, referring to Lezard's Secret Santa gift of seeds that grew dogs.

Who's Lezard? was Wishbone's response. I'm sorry, did I knock your game over?

She stopped and turned to him curiously, game momentarily forgotten. Not even Lezard's familiar spoke.

"A mage," she answered tentatively, "with a known interest in growing dogs from plants. Are you a student?"

While Kurama often tried to avoid those of a more heavenly persuasion (being a demon, such avoidance was practically instinctual) a game of chess was on the short list of things he found irresistible. He watched her play a moment before speaking up.

"While it is said that one's greatest opponent is oneself, playing a two-person game alone doesn't strike me as any particular kind of fun."

Silmeria glanced at the speaker, a soul not quite human. In fact, it felt slightly familiar. She had vanished many of his kind before but like Smaug, this individual was significantly different from them.

"Is playing games included in a demon's idea of fun?"

"Playing games is a major source of demonic fun." He grinned, taking a seat. "Although, the stakes are usually comprised of human souls or such rot, but I'll take conversation and a challenge as my spoils any day."

"That is good," Silmeria replied, repositioning the pieces. "And preferred over your destruction for wagering with human souls."

There were too many bystanders around for that. Besides, he's already broken multiple demon conventions by being articulate, polite and relatively hygienic.

"Are demons given names?"

Bond remembered Silmeria from her sorting, and was pleased to see her again. She seemed to be doing much better. The Valkyrie had a chess board out, but no opponent. After a minute of watching he soon saw why.

"Who's winning?" he asked her with a small smile and a friendly look.

Here was a familiar face.

"It is not a true match," she said, moving a piece and giving the board a turn. "But the practice can yield a victory later. Hello, Sir James."

It would be rude to laugh at the 'Sir,' so he shrugged it off. To each their own customs. "Have you been playing long, then?" he asked. "Would you like to practice with someone whose moves you can't predict?"

He was a good chess player, but nothing out of the ordinary. Bond was skilled at long-term strategy, but he simply never spent much time playing. Unlike cards, nobody talked about sitting down for a quick game of chess.

"I had not known of this game until a few weeks ago. It is nothing like a real battle. It is calming, for one."

It had been difficult to gauge her progress since picking up the game, playing only against herself. She grew familiar with it quickly and applied what strategies she could, but as she said, it was nothing like a real battle.

"I would appreciate that. Do you play this often?"
