Silmeria sat in the Great Hall, arms crossed and frowning at a chessboard in the midst of a game. Several minutes passed before finally moving a piece and then turning the board around to play continue playing the other side.  Ever since learning about the game, she had spent time practicing with the set she asked a house elf to bring to her

Wishbone dragged in one of his Christmas books to read. Sometimes you just wanted to have something to eat while reading.

He got a very indulgent house elf to help him get his book on the table, and some turkey to nosh on.

In his eagerness to read and eat, he didn't notice his wagging tail knocking over some chess pieces.

The sudden downfall of half her army effectively broke her concentration. She glared at the small dog and moved the board out of range of his tail.

"If Lezard sprouted you to annoy me, you've succeeded," she muttered as she arranged the pieces, referring to Lezard's Secret Santa gift of seeds that grew dogs.

[woocha]

Who's Lezard? was Wishbone's response. I'm sorry, did I knock your game over?

[rebelvalkyrie]

She stopped and turned to him curiously, game momentarily forgotten. Not even Lezard's familiar spoke.

"A mage," she answered tentatively, "with a known interest in growing dogs from plants. Are you a student?"

[woocha]

Yep! I'm Wishbone. He gestured to his book. I'm reading one of my Christmas gifts!

[rebelvalkyrie]

He reads, too. Were it not for his name, which was distinctly dog-like, she might have assumed he was a student bewitched into the form of a dog.

"I am Silmeria," she said, peering around the dog to see that he was indeed reading from a book. "What book are you reading?"

[woocha]

It's called The Tales of Beedle the Bard. It's a bunch of wizarding tales!

[rebelvalkyrie]

((Take two.))

"I see." She could not help it. She had to be sure. "Sir Wishbone, is this body your true form? You are unlike any of your kind that I have encountered."

[woocha]

Yep! I'm a dog! Well, I can turn into a cat, but I was born a dog!

[rebelvalkyrie]

A tiny, canine mage. At this rate, nothing was going to surprise her anymore. "Is that so? Did you learn to do so here, or have you always known how to perform such magic?"

[woocha]

I learned to! Kinda by accident though, I was trying to turn human.

[rebelvalkyrie]

"Interesting," Silmeria said. "You already seem quite accomplished as a dog. What do you wish to gain by becoming human?"

[woocha]

I want to eat chocolate! And hug people!

[rebelvalkyrie]

Those might be the most honestly joyful uses of magic she had ever heard of. "The simplicity of your goals do not take from their worthiness. Is there anyway I can assist you?"

[woocha]

I've been learning about Animagi! They're people that can turn into animals. And about the Patronus Charm, what animal is used to scare Dementors away is usually what animal you turn into.

[rebelvalkyrie]

"Who have you been learning this magic from?" She did not know what a Dementor was, but this Patronus Charm sounded like defensive magic.
