Demyx was wandering around the castle for lack of anything better to do and in the vague hope that he'd run into someone familiar. Instead he came across a bushy-haired girl a couple years younger than his own apparent appearance leaning against the wall outside the Great Hall and looking dejected.

He stopped. "Hey. Something wrong?"

"I'm just fine," Hermione said through clenched teeth. "It's Hogwarts that's gone completely nutters." And that was saying something, considering that was an expression Ron was more likely to use than she.

Demyx winced. "You're from back when this place was sane, huh? Take my advice; don't try to talk to the Hat. You think the students are crazy..."

Hermione could only shake her head helplessly. "I am strangely compelled to ask you to explain that," she said. "I don't understand any of this. At all."

"Mad is an apt description. Yet many of us thrive on such madness." The Chairman had been coming back to Gryffindor, after sending a letter to an acquaintance.

"And who are you, exactly?" Hermione demanded, a tad beligerently.

He's faced belligerent people before. He's kept his cool around them too.

"Takeshi Kaga," he bowed to Hermione.

Hermione took that in in silence. "I've never met an Eastern wizard," she said. "Are you here on some kind of exchange program?"

"Who's mad?"

Hermione stared down at the sunflower. "Shouldn't... Shouldn't you be back in the greenhouses?" she asked.

"No. Professor Kurama isn't in his and A is in his room. So I can't go see the greenhouses. Besides, I'm still exploring!"

"I'm pretty sure there isn't such a person as Professor Kurama," Hermione said, a touch impatiently. "And I have no idea who A is. But it was irresponsible for someone to charm a plant so it could talk and then leave it to wander around."

Ryuk didn't actually say anything, just leered at her while eating an apple.

"What do you want?" Hermione snapped, fighting an urge to reach for her wand.

"It's so amusing to see a frustrated human."

"You're... some kind of Dark Creature I haven't encountered in my studies, then," said Hermione, now seriously reaching for her wand, since that had been more of a statement than a question.

Fields was, rather unsuccessfully, looking for Gryffindor after her sorting. She'd found the Great Hall, at least. Truthfully, she'd found the Great Hall twice before, too. She always seemed to end up back there, no matter which way she went.

"I'm terribly sorry," she said to the girl, who also looked confused. Maybe birds of a feather should stick together? "Do you happen to know where Gryffindor is?"

"Oh, yes," said Hermione with abject bitterness. "I know right where it is. Not that I'd recommend staying there since it smells like a bloody Quidditch locker room at the moment." She realized that she should try to be nicer, but found herself unable to care all that much. "Here, I'll walk there with you," she added in a kinder tone, the one she'd used on lost first-years. "The castle can be a bit difficult to get used to." And that was before it had gone 'round the bend.

"Oh," she said, a little bit surprised at the description. "Well, it's the only place I have to stay at the moment."

Obediently, Strawberry followed her. "It's very kind of you," she said. "I'm hopelessly lost."

"It's easy to get lost in this place," Hermione said briskly. "You'll have to watch out for the moving staircases and the walking suits of armor."

She led Fields down a few halls and then pointed. "There. Just turn to your right and go up those stairs and you'll be there."
