I'm standing by a pillar, hidden out of sight "Why would I want to be in sight of you?" I say, not really wanting to be heard.

But heard he was, of course, and smelt even before then. Smaug tilted his head in the direction of the unseen voice.

"Why should you wish to be hidden?" was the dragon's innocuous reply. "Fairer to have our dealings face to face, if we're to have dealings at all."

"Fair's a resort for cowards and fools," I reply, remaining in the shadows. "And, after seeing your entrance, I'd prefer to remain out of your line of sight."

Smaug privately agreed, of course, though he was rather tempted to comment on the cowardice of remaining hidden, just to goad the person addressing him.

Probably better to keep his temper.

"As you like," he said at length, sounding unconcerned. "What, then, do you want from me?"

Zel hadn't spoken to a dragon in some time - and Filia was quite a different sort of dragon than this. He had, however, elected to keep his hood up, hiding his face - and shielding his eyes from the dragon's gaze. "A dragon willing to part with jewels and gold. That's an unusual sight."

The hood was a small nuisance, but not yet a concern. The weight of Smaug's burning gaze remained fixed upon the chimera all the same as he contemplated what was before him.

"Indeed," the dragon acknowledged. "As unusual as yourself, perhaps. Almost but not quite a Man... I can smell the enchantment."

"You've a keener nose than most, then." A thought crossed Zel's mind. This dragon would either scare Filia senseless or make her almost as mad as Xellos does. "One might wonder why you'd need to see others, then."

"I said nothing of need," Smaug replied lightly. He really hadn't meant to tip his hand with that last question on the parchment, and was beginning to regret it a little now. "It is merely polite to look at those you address, wouldn't you say?"

"EEK! FIRE!"

Walking, talking flora was not so unusual a sight to Smaug, but he'd learnt from experience to remain wary of it, no matter the size.

"Dragon's fire, yes," he said. "Only fools do not fear it."

"But it's still fire! I don't want to be hurt by it!"

"The tiny goblin creatures are eager to keep my fires in check." There was a trace of amusement in Smaug's tone. He doubted they could do much if he truly sought to raze the castle.

"Just what are you?" he asked, his focus returning to Sunflora.

"Not with this!" Ryuk held up his Death Note. "These sheets of paper can kill more humans than you can! And almost did. Well, not THIS Death Note, but still."

Smaug was well acquainted with the destructive potential of written spells and runework; Ryuk's claim provoked no surprise, only mild interest.

"Can it now? I should like to see." He exhaled dark smoke as he stared at the shinigami. "I have not smelt the likes of you before. What are you?"

"Well, I can't show it HERE, this place is a no-kill zone, but the gist is you write someone's name down, and they die. I'm a shinigami. Name's Ryuk."

"None can die here, then, shinigami Ryuk?" Smaug asked, suddenly keenly interested in what the shinigami had to say. That was certainly useful information to have.

Turlough shrugged. "Everyone's asked to prove they're not useless."

Finally another familiar scent Smaug could place-a Man, there was no doubting it.

"And how is this accomplished?"

vislor_turlough November 15 2008, 02:38:07 UTC
"By saying or doing what you can do, I suppose."

"I did already offer one display," he said, and cast a glance around the room before returning his attention to Turlough. "Unfortunately, those tiny goblin creatures extinguished it."
