open RP in the Great Hall: Is our Beowulf learning?

Apr 06, 2008 19:42

Beowulf had secured a date with a monster. This was AWESOME.

Problem was, he didn't know exactly what the date was supposed to entail. What was rugby, exactly? Were they supposed to play rugby or watch it? He had the impression that rugby was not just another term for swiving. More than that, he could not divine ( Read more... )

"HELLO, DOG OF WISHES." Beowulf beamed.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Wishbone didn't really need to shout back. But it was so much fun!

"I SEEK TO LEARN OF A THING CALLED RUGBY." Beowulf did not think he was shouting. He talked this way all the time!

What is love?/Baby don't hurt me/Don't hurt me/No more

Those immortal words floated through Dieter's mind as he read Beowulf's sign. Clad in terrycloth similar to how Beowulf was clad in leather, they made quite the pair.

"Rugby is a sport," he told the man. "With men beating the Scheiße out of each other to move a ball across a field. It's very invigorating to watch."

Beowulf had yet to discover the school sauna. Some day he too would be clad in a towel of snowy white. The Eurodance soundtrack would be optional.

His Teutonic ear caught Dieter's accent. "HAIL, COUNTRYMAN. YOUR TIDINGS OF RUGBY ARE MOST WELCOME. I SEEK TO KNOW OF ITS WAYS. FOR I HAVE A DATE."

A countryman! Dieter was thrilled to meet someone from back home.

"Glückwünsche!" he said, always happy to hear about love in the halls of Hogwarts. "Ihr Datum muß eine glückliche Person sein."

Rugby was a very uncivilized sport, compared to tennis. It was fun all the same, though. "Im Rugby versuchen die zwei Mannschaften, eine Kugel hinunter auffangen zu führen. Sie können es verschieben, indem Sie es treten oder mit ihm laufen. Das Ziel ist zu zählen, und das andere Ziel ist, den lebenden Misten aus der anderen Mannschaft heraus zu treten, damit sie nicht zählen."

Beowulf could almost follow some of this. Centuries of vowel shifts and consonant mutations ensured it did not really make sense to him, unfortunately. He tried his level best to answer in kind, suffused with mutually-incomprehensible Germanic joy.

"Soð ic talige ( ... )

Howl had to stop at a table that spoke of Rugby. At first he thought it was a team recruitment but after noticing Beowulf he thought differently. The poor man didn't know what the sport was did he, Howl was proud though that he had sparked such interest.

"You didn't think to look it up in a book did you?" of course not, that didn't seem to be the mans style. "I could teach it to you if you so desired," perhaps more people would become interested enough for teams. He would like that very much.

"WHAT WOULD YOU TEACH ME?" Beowulf was somewhat dubious that the foppish wizard fellow could know the ins and outs of such a manly and/or monstrous pursuit.

"The sport man, the sport. You seem a bit confused about it and as a proud Rugby player I feel it is my duty to educate you," Howl placed both his hands down on the table leaning over forward. He was a bit enthusiastic with the idea of getting to play, or at least explain how to play. "First you need fifteen players on both teams, but we can dumb it down and use seven if it becomes necessary."

Kratos walked through the Great Hall looking for something to do. He felt a bit guilty as he had been lax in his training since he came here, but it was bring to train when there was nothing to kill, or at least something to fight.

He then spied Beowulf, and his sign, and so walked over the the table. "I don't know, what is rugby?" He assumed Beowulf knew, and thats why he was sitting here with the sign.
