Benton Fraser was afraid of very little: he made a habit of jumping off of buildings and/or cliffs; he had faced the killers of his father and he had taken down some of the hardest men in Chicago without breaking a sweat; and he was the only cop in the city who didn't carry a gun. And yet nothing in the world terrified him more than
the woman who currently occupied the Sorting Room.
He raced from the room and pelted for the Owlery, running so fast that by the time he made it even he, with all his lung capacity, was winded. There was no time to catch his breath -- he had to warn his friends.
Dropping to his knees, using the floor for his desk, he grabbed several pieces of paper and a quill and quickly began to write.
Lily,
I realize that asking you this will only incite your curiosity, but I had to warn you. Please listen to me:
There is a woman in the Sorting Room right now who is extremely dangerous. I know it's in your nature to check out this sort of thing, but I beg of you, just this once, stay away. There is nothing you can do to her, and the worst thing you can possibly do is draw her attention. It will be better for everyone if you can bring yourself to stay away.
And I realize of course that you have no intention of listening to me, so if you do go (please don't), and you find her, at least don't tell her that you know me. Don't even mention my name. This woman lo ha will stop at nothing to get to you if she knows that she can use you against me.
Please, just this once, do as I ask. Stay away from the Sorting Room.
-Ben
PS: Yes, I'm serious.
Dear Stephanie,
I'm sorry to do this, but I have to ask forbid you to stay away from the Sorting Room until further notice. I can't tell you why.
-Fraser
I need to talk to you. My room, ten minutes.
He considered writing an owl to Cooper, but alerting Cooper about Victoria was a little too much like alerting the authorities, and even after everything she'd done to him, he couldn't turn her in. He wasn't sure Cooper would understand.
And Robin... well, Robin was the one person in this entire castle who might be safe. He hoped.
That taken care of, he sprinted back to Gryffindor to wait for Ray.
