The letter is smudged in several places, and very hastily written. The signature is almost illegible from tear-stains.
Mel-
I beg your forgiveness, (the rest of the line is obscured by an ink spill)
You were right about Mr. Darcy. Please, may I speak with you? I have never felt so wretched in my life.

He sent back a note of his own, almost immediately.
Miss Elizabeth,
I come.
-Simkin.
There was a lack of happiness in Simkin's eyes. Mostly, it was concern.

Instead, she wrote a reply. A very badly written one.
Thank you. I'm in the Ravenclaw Common Room.

An orange silk handkerchief drifted down from the roof of the Ravenclaw common room, and upon touching the ground became Simkin, who looked around almost anxiously.
"Miss Elizabeth? My dear, where are you?"

Think nothing of it, mate. I'm happy to help you however I can, even if it's just a compassionate ear.
I...cannot pretend to understand love - I doubt anyone could boast of that - but I have experienced the barest breath of what it can be. I don't know if I'm able to recognize it again in myself, but if you can bear with my fumblings than I'm more than willing to meet with you and talk over whatever you like.
I'm headed towards the Library now - would you like to meet me there?
~ Lily

Love. Odd topic, indeed.

To give herself more time to calm down, she folded her handkerchief several times, and walked silently around the library. After a few moments, she saw Lily, and made an effort to smile.
"Lily. Thank you very much for coming." Lizzy sat down across from her, with a flicker of her usual smile. "I hope I find you well?"

Are you OK? Are you hurt? What did he do to yo--screw this. I'm coming to find you.

It was easy to track upset people, and on this occasion, Mel blesses the fact Lizzy is so distressed.
'Lizzy?'

She forced something that was vaguely like a smile and waved, as she lacked the energy or the will to stand. "Hello Mel. Thank you. I am not hurt- not physically, in any case. But I do not think I have ever felt so... utterly bewildered." Lizzy twisted her soggy handkerchief around her hands and bit her lower lip, unsure of what to say next.

Mel says these questions worriedly as she sits near Lizzy, noticing the hanky and feeling herself absolutely ache for the poor girl.

Lizzy focused on her handkerchief, and balled it up. "I asked him the meaning behind them and... and he confessed that he loved me." Very quickly, she went on, "A to that end he confessed it as if it was some mortal failing or tragic flaw, and continually insulted my family and my choice of company. I dislike him, but I never meant to injure him or his feelings, and I- he seemed quite...." Lizzy lapsed into a very confused silence and concluded with a heartfelt, "I am very sorry about the whole affair."
