Lizzy is Distressed: Owls

Nov 27, 2006 03:24

The letter is smudged in several places, and very hastily written. The signature is almost illegible from tear-stains.

Mel-
I beg your forgiveness, (the rest of the line is obscured by an ink spill)
You were right about Mr. Darcy. Please, may I speak with you? I have never felt so wretched in my life.
-Lizzy

Simkin read over the letter twice, and swore most uncharacteristically.

He sent back a note of his own, almost immediately.

Miss Elizabeth,

I come.

-Simkin.

There was a lack of happiness in Simkin's eyes. Mostly, it was concern.

Elizabeth nearly cried in relief, and could think of nothing sensible to do.

Instead, she wrote a reply. A very badly written one.

Thank you. I'm in the Ravenclaw Common Room.

Continue thread here, or start a new one?

An orange silk handkerchief drifted down from the roof of the Ravenclaw common room, and upon touching the ground became Simkin, who looked around almost anxiously.

"Miss Elizabeth? My dear, where are you?"

Elizabeth ~

Think nothing of it, mate. I'm happy to help you however I can, even if it's just a compassionate ear.

I...cannot pretend to understand love - I doubt anyone could boast of that - but I have experienced the barest breath of what it can be. I don't know if I'm able to recognize it again in myself, but if you can bear with my fumblings than I'm more than willing to meet with you and talk over whatever you like.

I'm headed towards the Library now - would you like to meet me there?

~ Lily

Whenever Elizabeth arrived in the Library, she would find Lily in a tucked-away corner, surrounded by stacks of books. One tome lay open in front of her, a quill in hand, but, uncharacteristically, Lily was not absorbed in her work. Instead, the quill twirling absently through her fingers, Lily was staring off into the distance, a vaguely troubled expression on her face.

Love. Odd topic, indeed.

Lizzy had done the best she could to fix her appearance and maintain some semblance of composure, but her eyes were still red from crying, and her hands trembled, despite her best attempts at stopping them.

To give herself more time to calm down, she folded her handkerchief several times, and walked silently around the library. After a few moments, she saw Lily, and made an effort to smile.

"Lily. Thank you very much for coming." Lizzy sat down across from her, with a flicker of her usual smile. "I hope I find you well?"

Are you OK? Are you hurt? What did he do to yo--screw this. I'm coming to find you.

It was easy to track upset people, and on this occasion, Mel blesses the fact Lizzy is so distressed.

'Lizzy?'

Lizzy was sitting off in a corner when Mel walked in.

She forced something that was vaguely like a smile and waved, as she lacked the energy or the will to stand. "Hello Mel. Thank you. I am not hurt- not physically, in any case. But I do not think I have ever felt so... utterly bewildered." Lizzy twisted her soggy handkerchief around her hands and bit her lower lip, unsure of what to say next.

'What's up? What did Mr. Darcy do? Can I help?'

Mel says these questions worriedly as she sits near Lizzy, noticing the hanky and feeling herself absolutely ache for the poor girl.

"I think I may be blowing it completely out of proportion, but, ah...." Elizabeth took a deep breath and released it in a shaky sigh. "Forgive me. I cry more from shock than from distress. I... happened to mention something that upset Mr. Darcy, which led to him insulting my family and my person, and some rather... ambiguous comments."

Lizzy focused on her handkerchief, and balled it up. "I asked him the meaning behind them and... and he confessed that he loved me." Very quickly, she went on, "A to that end he confessed it as if it was some mortal failing or tragic flaw, and continually insulted my family and my choice of company. I dislike him, but I never meant to injure him or his feelings, and I- he seemed quite...." Lizzy lapsed into a very confused silence and concluded with a heartfelt, "I am very sorry about the whole affair."
