An alchemist is a scientist who studies the principles that allow one to understand, deconstruct, and reconstruct matter.

Of course it's "real". Alchemy is a respected science in my world. One can manipulate matter by drawing an array--a written formula, if you will--and using a transmutation circle to channel energy. It relies on knowing the principles of chemistry and various other hard sciences... but the effects are quite real.
