Kili and Fili, competition to see who can be dumber.

During the quest to reclaim Erebor Kili and Fili are basically trying to out stupid each other. It's why they're always acting really dumb and foolish.
The company has no idea that it's just a game, which makes it even funnier to Kili and Fili, who are wondering how far they'll have to go to make someone actually call them idiots to their faces despite the fact they're princes.

Bonus: Thorin has no idea it's an act because they've been playing this game whenever he's around since they where little. So Thorin is a bit worried about the fact his heirs seem to be morons.

I could picture them just fooling around a bit , not knowing hes watching, until he says something along the lines of them being dumb and them just taking offense to it and doing it to provoke him.

And Dis is in the background shaking her head. OMG AND he can't say anything about it because apart from loosing the ponies (and that was probably just not avoidable , who knows what they were doing) they haven't endangered the quest.
