How to run hidejournal 0.3. (Slanted towards Windows users)

Make sure you're not using tags.

Because HideJournal was written before the introduction of tags to LiveJournal, it will strip tags from entries. You should expect to have to back them up and restore them by hand if you want to use the current release of HideJournal.
Download java

HideJournal requires java. You will need to download and install it ( Read more... )

Hmm, a couple of things I can think of: either you downloaded the source, rather than the release (in which case you'll have extracted a bunch of .java files - is that the case?), or winzip has taken over your .jar extension. In which case, try right-clicking, Open With, then either javaw or java (it depends on what version of java you have installed).

Let me know if that helps.

Similar problem. I tried open with and slected javaws and I get "Java Loading..." and then a pop-up that says "Unable to launce the specific application" The details option brings up this:

An error occurred while launching/running the application.

Category: Launch File Error

The following required field is missing from the launch file:

If you mean making all your friends-only posts public, nope.

Can you tell me more precisely what happens?

  1. Can you download it? Do you have a file called hidejournal-0.3.jar?
  2. When you double-click on that file, does a window appear? If not, can you right-click, then run it with javaw or javaws?
  3. When you enter your username and password and hit run, does it print "Hiding Mama Musings's entries?"

If none of these really describe your situation, can you write out exactly what steps you take up until the point where you become stuck?

Yes, it does all that. It says "Hiding Momgoddess's entries" but then it does nothing after that, it doesn't seem to be hiding any entries, I've tried it over and over and let it go for over and hour and looked and just nothing.

Hmm, you don't have a huge number of entries - if you're on dialup or a slow, shared connection, and most of your old entries are friends-only already, you'll see this happening. I would suggest that you try running it overnight and seeing if that works, though it shouldn't take that long, I agree.

If that doesn't work, I'm testing an update to the client which should make the process a lot faster.

Hi! I'm having an issue while trying to use hidejournal. The first time I ran it, it was working fine but then it closed itself out before hiding all my entries. Every time since that I've tried to run it, it gives me a message saying "Couldn't use the network connection! You might want to try again later."

I would normally assume something is wonky with my internet service, but it's working fine and I'm having no trouble with other processes. Any ideas? Thanks!

Oooh, interesting one. First thing to do is to try running it some period of time after, an hour is a good amount. If that doesn't work, let me know, and I'll send you a special version that will help me pinpoint what's gone wrong.
