History? Ignored? Whyyyy???? (or why polliet is wrong)

Apr 29, 2011 17:25

Okay I'll start off by saying hello :) it's my first time posting, hope I'll get this right.

The main subject I want to wank about is the way Lithuanian - Polish relations are portrayed in hetalia. (NOTE: I know hetalia is not a history book and does not need to be 100 proc. accurate, neither am I hating on the pairing itself... just hear me out)

The whole rant. Plus history. )

character: poland, general: fandom, character: lithuania, general: canon

mmmm this is probably similar to the way Sufin fans portray the Winter War (aka Sweden leaving 'his wife' alone and sort of) Himaruya never mentions any of it and always draw the 2 of them getting along very well

so it's kind of similar to other countries relation in Hetalia (Spain invasion of Italy is supposed to be very crude by some people standards :|)

It seems Himaruya doesnt really bug into this aspects by making it look less angst (like Lithuania saying he hates Poland for his egoism but then continues getting worried about Poland)

I understand your point, and I know their relationship is in many cases portrayed in a much more optimistic light than it really was. Yes I too dislike it when I see them as bffs/tragic lovers throughout their whole history. (let's not talk about how this rant is relevant to several other fluffy hetalia pairings, or the wank will never stop.)

However, I read several fanfics that coped with the Vilnius issue, and their relationship was described as very strained in that particular period of time. There are a lot of LietPol writers and not all of them are unaware of the facts, and there is drama, too :)

From what I found in my bookmarks, there's a dark microfil about Zeligowski's mutiny here. (I can only write Ž with this keyboard -.-)

Then there is a wonderful but sadly yet unfinished America/Lithuania friendship fic featuring Poland here

This was also an interesting concept where the personification's attitude is not necessary the official national status quo (second fill) here

And the issue wasn't ignored in two fills for the same prompt, the unfinished one here on the kink meme and one of the imho best LietPol fics ever Like Cobwebs from daegaer

Well, first off, Himaruya ignored a lot of historical facts. Like, a lot. Hetalia itself is a lighthearted parody, so I don't know why anyone would expect some grave historical event to occur unless Himaruya decided to portray it (such as the American Revolution). And if you are to say why this isn't presented, why aren't a lot of other historical facts put in? You can't pick and choose, unless you're Himaruya himself. There's a lot of history Himaruya glossed over that I would like to see, but hey, I can't do anything about that besides write what I do. So, PolLiet isn't "wrong," because it goes against your view of how things should be presented ( ... )

I would write something, alas I have not been blessed with the talent. If I ever do, I'll let you know :) (it's the wank community, isn't complaining the whole point?)

as far as the problems with canon... we'd never finishing picking it apart once we started, accuracy is just not what hetalia is about. you could see it as frustrating or see it as a fancfic opportunity, right? and i do like historical fanfic but i'm also really picky with how it's done ... it's really easy to become, ahh, uncomfortable? and that's probably why himaruya dances right the heck around a lot of things

i think the connection they have can be shown in ways other than ~bff4lyfe~ way that canon goes for jwkflalk (and they do argue and have problems in canon, fandom just chooses to ignore that... i guess? also, i read into things too much. orz) i still like to ship it, i like their history so much, i'm just very picky with how it's portrayed orz

hopefully someone will have reccomendations as my own pickiness scares me away from a lot of fanfic areas ;x;a

haha i have never posted on this comm before i'm uhh sorry for not having much wank-y stuff to say i guess /)///(\

Think a minute here. Why hasn't Himaruya really talked about the period in which they didn't get along at all? Because Poland and Lithuania are not main characters. There are tons of historical periods for the main characters that haven't been touched upon yet, so why does it make you so upset that one particular period in Polish-Lithuanian history hasn't been brought up yet? The key word here, also, is "yet". One thing that's always rubbed me the wrong way when people talk about things that they want to see in Hetalia and think really should be there, be it events or new characters or what have you, is this tendency to talk like Hetalia is a finished series. It's not. Himaruya is drawing new strips and creating new characters all the time ( ... )

Nono, it's okay, you're right. I did get a bit abrasive there, since I have a lot of ships that tend to come under fire re; "historical accuracy", usually much worse than this. So it kind of annoys me. But yeah, I was quick to assume that, though if that IS what they want, they probably won't get it.

Agreeing with you so hard. Especially with how people act like Himaruya can't add more to the series. It's not like it's finished yet!
