Nathional anthems and characterisation in Hetalia

Jun 01, 2009 18:20

I noticed a couple of things when I looked up various national anthems - some of them seem to match their nation-tan really well. Has anyone else noticed this? Do you think it's just coincidence or something Hidekaz used as inspiration for creating his characters?

Some examples and wikilinks here )

Well, the french anthem IS scary! XDD

Basically, it was a battle song, made during the french revolution( a *very* bloody period of our history), so every one was all patriotic 'n stuff...

Some years ago there was a debate on whether keeping this anthem or changing it, since it's very agressive and not really fitting the actual french mood XDDD

Yeah, I know :) I mostly meant that it doesn't really fit with the portrayal of France in Hetalia...

Yeah, that's true ^^;

I think that one wich fit him better would be either "La Madelon" or "Auprès de ma blonde", wich can be looked like love songs.

They are both military songs, and are played during officials march such as the national day (the 14th of july),

Germay's old national anthem, "Deutschland über alles" definitely fits

Hmmm... Did you consider the other lyrics to the German anthem? I think they were removed due to political correctness. The line Deutschland über alles seems to fit Ludwig because he acts like he's better than the other Axis Powers all the time.

Nice to see how every country has such morbid messages in their anthems.

Hmm, I dunno, Ludwig just seems to bloody awkward most of the time o.0 Like, he yells at Italy and everything, but he doesn't have that same "I FRIGGIN RULE"-spirit like America, Prussia and Korea. Though that's just how I see him

He's definitely bossy though, but that's such a general German stereotype that I couldn't pick it out of the national anthem specifically

True, true... But the older version fits him better than the current anthem. If only by a little.

*cough* Well, he is Nazi-Germany in most parts of the main Hetalia story, so...

For America, this isn't a national theme but still matches him quite well: The United States Air Force Song. A few lines stand out in particular:

We live in fame or go down in flames

and

Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer
Gave us wings, ever to soar!

Here's a link, with my favorite spoken parts unfortunately absent (for example, when the line "At 'em, boys, give 'er the gun!" plays, generally the singers then yell "Give 'er the gun! Hey!")
