Hi OP-who-spawned-this! It's your author!anon. So, uhm, I just really, really really wanted to apologize because I tried but I just couldn't do this in a human AU. I mean... I just can't do human AUs and I tried for you but I failed. ;-; But! I wrote you the fic anyway, which I believe I am mostly done with as I write this(we'll see, and I'm sorry that you've been feeling badly, or where feeling badly(since I am a bit late)and I hope that this cheers you up and that you aren't terribly disappointed.

To Go Hand-In-Hand -- Part One A (out of 5 or 6) anonymous July 15 2010, 07:05:19 UTC
Usually when someone doesn’t show up to a meeting with him, Canada takes it in stride and eats dinner alone, watches the game alone, sees the movie alone. Sometimes, he brings one of his provinces along just in case; they’re very sympathetic. Once he’d invited America to a concert and Wisconsin had shown up instead. It had been somewhat disheartening, because what kind of nation invites their brother to something and gets their niece instead, but it had been better than no one.

There was one very large exception to this: Hockey games with Russia. It had started sometime in 1968, and had become a regular occurrence after 1992 or so, after which they met for hockey games regularly. When Russia couldn’t make it, Canada would receive a call. This isn’t true for anything else: at G8 meetings, at the Olympics, anywhere but in matters of hockey Canada is as invisible to Russia as he is to all of the other nations. Canada desn’t even attempt anything outside of going to hockey games with Russia ( ... )

Russia isn’t supposed to stand him up and ignore his calls and live in a big, empty, sad house where he makes heart breaking looks when Canada insults him. The large nation hangs up, but moves forward. Canada puts his phone away and stops leaning over as Russia fumbles with locks. The door swings open and Russia says, “Ah, Canada, this ees not… the best time for… your visiting. Come back later, da ( ... )

Russia glances behind him, and then tries to fill up the rest of the doorway. He does a pretty good job of it, too, as he says, “Ah, Canada, I am very sorry for - for having forgotten to meet vith you. Da, but now ees not being a good time, so eef you could just be going now ( ... )

Oh anon, this is lovely so far. Canada isn't out and out the wibbly moe or the manry Canada, but a very, very good blend, and Russia, I think you have his lack of confidence down perfectly.

This version of my Canada is an awkward well-meaning somewhat-disillusioned Canada! =D Yay~
And my Russia is usually vulnerable. Except when he's crazy, but sometimes he's vulnerable then, too. X3

I'm glad that you enjoy it.

I've needed something like this for awhile~! Your writing style is brilliant and I friggen love the characterizations so far.
f5-ing the the extreme!

Captcha: 'beet jones'. I do believe Ivan would feel better after beating Alfred up! Let's go catch some planes to America, eh?

I'm happy to provide! And thank you about the characterization... this Canada is different from the Canada I usually write, so he's a bit difficult to manage.
Also by this point I'm two parts in and it's not explicitly Russia/Canada yet, so that's hard. xD

Pffft you'll be getting a shout out, eeep!anon. Look for it.

A noose. The scarf is tied as a noose.

Canada whips around to stare at Russia. “What the shit is that?” He is so harsh that Russia recoils, and his façade brakes. Suddenly he looks as lonely and stricken as he had when Canada had called him a ‘rat bastard’. Russia’s shoulders slump, and his smile drops. It’s a startling change and Canada doesn’t like it. Canada wonders if Russia contemplates hanging himself often. Canada wonders if Russia always does it right before they see a hockey game, or if he does it all the time. There is a sick feeling in Canada’s gut when he wonders these things: he is not sure if he wants it to be all the time and not his fault, or all his fault but fixable ( ... )

“Russia…” He approaches Russia like he approaches bears: easy, gentle, ready to take down a mother fucker if need be. Russia looks up at him - when had his eyes dropped? - and Canada continues softly, “I don’t want to watch. I…” What does he want? He wants his hockey watching buddy back. He wants Russia back to normal. He doesn’t want Russia to die. “… I want you to take my scarf.” It had been a gift from France. It is red, and well cared for, and absolutely nothing like Russia’s old scarf. Canada unwinds it from around his neck, even though it lets the air of Russia’s house at his neck. He holds it out to Russia, who is stunned again, and fidgeting. Canada pleads, “Please take it ( ... )

“I do not understand,” Russia tells Canada. He sounds lost. He is staring at the scarf which hangs from the ceiling, staring past the nation in front of him. “The next me would be much more fun to be going to hockey games with, da? Not so… unlikeable. You should save your scarf for him or her, Canada, maybe be friends, da ( ... )

To say that she's a little heart broken now. Canada's thought process, the fear that that is how nations view him and then the fear that he's the one who hurt Russia is so sweet in an adorakably awful way.

Russia, poor Russia, I know hugging psychopathic manchildren is frowned upon but if I could, I totally would. Still the characterization is awesome here, Canada wavering from confident to not, and not really knowing what to do even though he does, and how Russia just Doesn't Get It, it's all very good.

Awwe, anon the first. You made my day by commenting. I'm sorry I broke your heart but I promise that I'll do my best to fix it. D: My other Canada/Russia fic is not nearly this sad making.

Again thank you for your lovely words. It's nice to know that I have done well with my characterization... I worry over it at night. And in the day. D:

ReCaptcha: careful voltage. No, Captcha. No, I... I d-don't think that voltage, careful or not, would help. ._.

I love your description of how Canada handles bears, but the rest of this fill is making me baaaw (in a good way ♥).

I really like that Canada's not automatically saying the right thing to get Russia to step back - he's trying, but it's not magically deus ex machina'd. It's more realistic, and so much better to read about.

*sends love*

=D Thanks! I'm a big believer in not making things easy for my characters to figure out, mostly because I think that if I did I'd get really bored.

Excuse me while I turn your love into more Canada/Russia h/c.
