The Russian Orthodox Church took a real beating during the Soviet Union: over 50,000 members of the clergy were persecuted, thousands of churches were destroyed or used as army barracks and storehouses, people shied away from the religion out of fear...but all that changed after the fall of the Soviet Union. Millions rushed to be baptized, the destroyed churches were rebuilt and today over 60% of the population of Russia consider themselves Orthodox
