Bah, this did not go anywhere near as originally planned. Sorry for the lack of concrete rediscovery.
Echoes of bellsThe echo of Russia’s footsteps followed his feet as he walked down the aisle leading to the pulpit. Tomorrow the empty spaces between the benches would be filled with people. The silent organ would sing its chorus of rebirth to St Petersburg, its heavy notes causing the air to tremble. What a celebration it was supposed to be. A spiritual rebirth. But he could not feel it. He could not bring himself to look forward to the next day with anything short of consternation

They had asked him to allow them to confiscate church property and he had said okay. They had told him that they would send believers to labour camps and he allowed it. They had shot the bishops and he had watched.
And still God did nothing.
He felt that, surely, as a nation, he was closer to God than any mortal human being. Yet why could he not feel, as his people did now, the urge to return unto him? Why did he look onto these walls and see nothing but walls and what had been done to them? He felt nothing. Nothing at all.
Lord, if thou hadst been here, you would not have let those people die.
But what was to be done? He would be here tomorrow smiling and pretending to be reconciled while the believing gathered and smiled with him, at him maybe. Maybe worst of all.
He tilted his head back, thinking of Mary and Martha and their poor brother Lazarus. Now if he had seen a miracle like that, he would not be in this mess. If the bodies of those bishops had sprung back to life he would have known for certain.

Why does this not have comments yet? I love the lyrical reflection on faith and Russia is perfectly IC, especially with his past confidence in the Orthodox church and himself as the most Christian nation.

Gorgeous. I loved this. Oh, I wish I had something a little more elaborate to say, but... this is exactly the attitude I would see Russia having when the rules were reversed as described. The formatting and the verses you selected were perfect, too, and the 'slightly unsettling feeling' you mentioned. This is some post-fall Russia, right here.
Russia rediscovering his faith
