The studio was emptying out, the crowd still grinning and clapping as they navigated to the exits. Colbert was waving fanatically from behind his desk and bowing every few seconds. He blew a kiss to someone who shouted out a breathless love confession in jest, before sitting back down in his chair and spinning in a satisfied circle. The show’s theme music was still blaring from the speakers, and he beat out a rhythm on the surface of his desk, eventually picking up a pen to add a different tone.
America observed this with his own smile, leaning against the wall to one side of the center exit. By now the security recognized him and did nothing to deter his presence. The stony-faced (inappropriately so considering the atmosphere) men shuffled past, shooing the overexcited audience further down the hall. The nation couldn’t help the almost giddy relief pounding in his chest. If America could laugh that much when he was supposed to be in dire straits, he was going to be fine. Wow. Simply wow.
Loved the dialogue. The banter was very playful and just seems to flow naturally. You have a lot of great one-liners here. Loved the characterizations. Also, Colbert basing his studio persona on Alfred? So. Damn. True. I... love it. Yes.
My brain has melted from this unquantifiable level of AWESOME.
