Wow. So sad and so eerie.

Apparently, Stephen J. Cannell died at age 69.  I did not know this. He's the first creator/showrunner of any of my fandoms to die.  Okay, Kim Manners died, but he wasn't the showrunner for SPN.  And I'm still sad about that.  This makes me sad because I swear the guy created like 1/3rd of the hit shows of the 1980s another 3rd was created by ( Read more... )

Aw, I was sad when I heard about it, and the only work of his I've actually seen is his cameo on Castle.

Sadly, I actually didn't really know who he was until I checked the back flap of one of his books at the library just to see if he was a real mystery author.

Oh goodness, The A Team. I wanted to like it, I really tried but when you get right down to it, it's four dudes driving around doing improbably awesome, sometimes vaguely offensive things out the back of a rape van. I'm not meaning to disparage your fondness for a much beloved classic, action, comedy; I know a lot of people that love The A-team WAY more than is probably healthy that's just what I got from it.

I get that The A-Team is not for everybody, and I do feel kind of bad that I keep posting about because I'm afraid I'll alienate people, but there's one important thing to remember while watching it: Do Not. Take It. Seriously. At All. I've seen a couple of interviews with two of the original actors, and they've openly admitted that it was a goofy, crazy show.

it's four dudes driving around doing improbably awesome, sometimes vaguely offensive things out the back of a rape van.

Rape van? What? The Van is awesome! The A-Team without the Van is like the Doctor without the TARDIS, Captains Kirk and/or Picard without the Enterprise, or the Winchesters without the Impala.

Yes, quite a few of the things they do seem "vaguely offensive," as you put it, because the early-to-mid-1980s was an extremely conservative time, so they could get away with a lot more sexism, jingoism, and ethnic stereotypes than anyone could ever get away with today. That's the part of the show I don't like.

The characters are the part of the show that I ( ... )

I didn't mean to offend so I'm super sorry if I did, I just love to talk about movies/TV and the A-Team isn't one that you get to talk about very much.

The characters were the one thing I do like about the show (a lot actually) it was the stories that I couldn't get into which was surprising as I usually love that kind of "bad guy of the week, lets do improbably awesome things and have a good laugh at the end of the day" shows (like Leverage, Firefly, etc.)

I guess I could give it another shot and take it a little less seriously. It's not that have trouble getting into TV shows that are more dated, Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows of all time and I couldn't sit through any of the Star Trek series except for TOS, I think that it was more that I know a lot of people that think it's the best thing ever and it just wasn't. Again, I'm sorry if I offended you, I totally didn't mean to.

It's alright, I'm not offended. I was just excited to discuss this one because usually "discussion" = "giggly fangirling" (which is fun, but variety is really nice). I think I accidentally went into scholarly-mode went I started explaining it.

Yes, the characters really are the best part. Quite a few of the scenes with the bad-guys-of-the-week make me cringe, usually because of how dense they are. Face's romances are hilariously cheesy, but I get a kick out of them because Face is just so charming. And for some reason, I can't help analyzing Murdock, which is really sad.

Only if you want to---it's not something to be coerced into. I'm sorry, I didn't know that. I just don't want to assume that everyone is an old-TV-junkie, like I tend to be. The A-Team is definitely not the best thing ever---I place it firmly in guilty pleasure territory. Just wondering: were these people you've mentioned fans of the show from childhood? Those seem to be the kind of people who treat it like it's the most perfect creation ever. I always ( ... )
