Pumpkins everywhere, small and large, including the white ghost pumpkins that make me laugh. Piles of squash in a jumble of different colors and shapes. The nice young cop who works the market beat standing with his coffee in front of one of the pastry stands, trying to decide between an apple fritter and a bear claw (I think he's working his way ( Read more... )

You know, somewhere around here I have a whole stash of recipes in the "can be made in a dorm kitchen" category: things that require only one bowl or one pot or whatever, are easy to make, and impress the neighbors. I was befriended by my entire hall my first year of college on the basis of a single batch of carmel-nut brownies. Let me know if you ever want the recipes and I'll pass them along.

I would love the red pepper soup recipe. Is it dairy free?

I second the request for the red pepper soup recipe.

Also: kale? You know how to cook kale? Share! I beg you! Because every time I've tried, I have failed to beat it into submission and have ended up with a tough, stringy, indigestible bolus. Help?

How did the eggplant salad turn out, BTW?

Soup recipe, check; will post later. And I liked the eggplant salad very much; it's a lot like my favorite baba ghanoush recipe, except of course without the tahini and spiced a little differently. Yum, eggplant with paprika ( ... )

Aha! I think it was the central rib that spelled my doom. Good to know.

Thanks so much for the advice and the recipes. I'm really glad you enjoyed the eggplant salad! I'll have to think of some more recipes I can reward you with. (:

I am tempted to continue yammering on about the really good red pepper soup I made for dinner last night (with polenta croutons!), but upon sober consideration I think I've done enough obsesso-food-geek blithering for one day.

I'm thinking of an early MTV slogan here.

. . . and you're gonna have to tell me what it is, because this is my brain on lack-of-pop-culture-referents.

Should I know that? Because it doesn't sound the slightest bit familiar. Is this you being freaky-pop-culture-girl or me being incredibly out of it?

Yay! Market! Market! Go market!

If you buy something weird in a fit of enthusiasm and don't know what to do with it when you get it home, let me know and I can probably help you out. *g*
