Little bit of pirate fic

Nov 11, 2006 19:55

This one's been rattling around in my head for ages and finally agreed to be finished. To celebrate, I made a new icon to go with it.

Many thanks to jenthetypsy for her beta work on the fic and to geek_mama_2 for being my title beta!

Crossposted to 100_situations in response to prompt 77, administer, from my table, and to pirategasm.

I'm glad you think Gibbs' voice worked well in this. Thanks for taking the time to comment - I really appreciate it.

(Oh, jeeze - for a minute there I was using a Jack Shepherd icon!)

First off - new icon = made of awesome! Extremely well done creepified and squirmy icon, absolutely perfect for this fic.

Secondly - title = whoa! I love that I learn so many things from my fandoms! I never would have thought of a word like that!

Thirdly - fic = chilling! Very well done, too. You finally stared the beast down, didn't you? Excellent work, and I don't know if I told you before how much I like the voice of the crone. There is a decided rhythm to her speech which comes through very well in print.

The image of Jack limp as a rag doll is so vivid, making this whole story very real indeed. The cramped room filled with the heat of the night and the stink of putrid flesh - very descriptive (and more than slightly stomach-turning as well!). To hear how upset Gibbs is by Jack's unnatural stillness is also very daunting. A still Sparrow may as well be a dead Sparrow.

The most chilling of the entire chilling fic for me were these lines: May could ( ... )

*giggles* Uh oh, getting your Jacks mixed up! But it can be easy to do - the year Lost S1 was airing, I noticed that every show I watched had a character named Jack...

I do love the new icon. Once the idea occurred, of course I had to do it, but it took ages to find the screen cap. And am delighted that you like the title - you, more than anyone else, know how I struggle for them.

Am quite happy you liked my old healer, her voice and her speculations, and that limp Jack was unsettling. Thank you so much for your lovely comments, especially after all the time it took me to finish. *hugs*

Omg!! Ack!! The icon illustrates it rather perfectly. Ewww. Poor Jack! Thank goodness he has friends to take care of him. The fact that he won't say anything, except to add to The Legend, is so very Jack.

These particular scars have nagged at me since I first watched the deleted scene - they're so ugly and awful, and there's no way to tell what caused them. (Now we need someone to write the story Jack tells. *pushes plotbunny west*) Thanks for commenting here - I really appreciate it, especially since you'd already read it to give me feedback on title ideas.

Oh, just love it... a great balance here, with the sheer ickiness and horror of the wound without being melodramatic; Gibbs' concern for Jack without being sentimental; and of course, the Jack Sparrow Legend - no, he won't say how it happened because to not say is to add to his reputation, but there's also a very clear undertone of vulnerability to it, as well.

And ILLUSTRATIONS in the form of an icon! Wonderful and horrible!

It's always fascinating to me how we all want to know more about Jack Sparrow, know his history and solve his riddles - and yet, it's the mysteries that makes him Jack Sparrow, and to define him would be to make him less than who and what he is. This fic is a lovely example of exploring one of the mysteries of Jack without explaining it.

You're so right. We want to know the answers and all the details, but at the same time we love the enigma and the stories of sea turtles and ropes made of human hair.

Thanks for the wonderfully detailed comment. I really appreciate your taking the time to let me know what you liked.
