I knew there was something that hadn't been AMAZING about this ep - it was the Doctor saying Luke should've used the "conditional". What actual bull - it's the subjunctive!! Conditional implies condition (obv.) whereas the subjunctive implies possibility. As far as I know the switching of was/were = subjunctive.

Otherwise, though, best episode ever in my (humble) opinion.

No--the Doctor was saying that it's a conditional clause--which it is. "If _____" is a conditional statement ("If only that were possible"). But you are right in that the verb is in the subjunctive mood. :)

And yah, kickass episode. :) Thanks for stopping by!

Y'see, I thought so.
The statement may be the conditional, yeah, but I'm glad I'm still right.. lol

sooo with you on most parts!! Finally someone who wrapped the doctors personality/being/whatever in a few, nice, understandable sentences. I'm rubbish when it comes to that.

I've said before--though not in my LJ--that I see the Doctor as a queer figure. Not queer in the sense of "gay" (though my fic might indicate otherwise), but in the theoretical sense of an outsider who doesn't adhere to established norms of masculine behavior--he's an intellectual first.*nods* exactly. everything about that is simply true ( ... )

Heh. Thanks! I was mucking about with that a little. I'm really interested in that stuff generally (gender studies and whatnot) but I tend to get a little jargon-y when I start to talk about it. :) I'm glad I got my point across.

I think there's a long tradition of that in this show--the word play, certainly, it just happened to be brought out in this episode, and the Doctor's intellectualism. I'm sure they'll let me write a paper on this in grad school... :P

And yes--Nerdy!Doctor is love. I love the bit when he says to the UNIT general, "I get lonely." Cracked me up. :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Not queer in the sense of "gay" (though my fic might indicate otherwise), but in the theoretical sense of an outsider who doesn't adhere to established norms of masculine behavior--he's an intellectual first. All that word play serves to align him against the Sontarans and their representation of a more traditional masculine ideal (honor found in violence and aggression) and with a more feminized form of resistance.

I totally agree with this. He really takes on the spirit of...I don't want to say "the cause" because that sounds ridiculous, but he's like a wonderful role model for everyone, despite being an outsider, and I think that mirrors I lot of ideals about love and diversity ( ... )

Yeah, definitely. I love that the Doctor is a queer figure who is also a hero--that he's often fighting the forces of conformity. Of course, not without the cost of sometimes having to become like them--we've seen that in the new series, at least (I haven't seen the old)--but the show has also been sure to explore those ramifications.

The Doctor is such a rich character to keep exploring, especially as he's been around for so long and so many writers and actors and fans have had the opportunity to interpret him in their own ways. There's so much there. I won't say I don't like to ship, at least in my fanfic, but when it comes to the show itself I'm also really interested in all the other thematic elements.

I felt bad for him, too! But I liked that he didn't try to stop her, and he said some very honest things to her. Of course, then he got all embarrassed and it was adorable, but yeah. Love for Donna.

Well, I loved it! I don't analyze the episodes too much the first time I watch them. I suppose I just want to be entertained and not let anything spoil them for me.

I think my favorite part was bringing in the expert. Who'd you get? :P The Doctor is too cute for words!

Donna is still majorly kicking bottom as well! Personnel files! What a great idea!

Yes, yes and yes. I loved that bit about bringing in the expert. I also liked his line about wanting to visit the house full of geniuses, because he gets lonely. That cracked me up. :) If I wrote down all the bits I liked, my review posts would be waaay too long. (And they're already pretty damn long.)

I love that Donna's experience as a temp is an asset! I'm a temp right now; I'll have to remember, if I ever find myself traveling with the Doctor, to call upon this experience when necessary. :P But I do like that--because temps and admins are always (or often, anyway) dismissed, but really...we know all.

I don't analyze the episodes too much the first time I watch them.

I may or may not have watched it twice. ::shifty eyes:: Though I suppose this shows why I'm planning to study lit and pop culture for a living? I can't help but analyze. :P

Glad you stopped by!

LOL I enjoy your reviews! I tend to avoid the ones that only complain about how terrible the episode was. I did a lot of that last season, and it nearly ruined it for me. We all know DW has plot holes the size of countries!

Oh, I agree about temps. It's a seriously underappreciated job.

hehehe Analyze away! You're good at it! Anyway, it's nice reading other people's thoughts because I think about things I might have missed.

You know, RTD could have given us one Jack reference. :P *clings to favorite pairing*

So, I know what I'm going to get you for the challenge you responded to on my LJ! YAY!

In other news, how's your challenge fic going?

Yay! I'm glad you like them. :) I tend not to read reviews that are negative, to be honest. I know that's probably narrow-minded of me, but I don't like to have other people's negativity bring me down. I choose to overlook all the plot holes etc--because seriously: once you've bought into the 900-year-old alien with a time-traveling phone box that's bigger on the inside, I think it's safe to say you've suspended your disbelief. I'm just here to enjoy it. :)

(And quite frankly, I'm amazed that there's so much dislike of last season--because S3 was the one that really sucked me in and made me into the completely obsessed fangirl that I am today!)

You know, RTD could have given us one Jack reference. :P *clings to favorite pairing*

Agreed! Silly RTD.

So, I know what I'm going to get you for the challenge you responded to on my LJ! YAY!

Yay! ::bounce:: That reminds me, I need to repost that meme still.

In other news, how's your challenge fic going?Nearly done. I think. I'm hoping to get the full draft done tonight and ( ... )
