I've said before--though not in my LJ--that I see the Doctor as a queer figure. Not queer in the sense of "gay" (though my fic might indicate otherwise), but in the theoretical sense of an outsider who doesn't adhere to established norms of masculine behavior--he's an intellectual first. All that word play serves to align him against the Sontarans and their representation of a more traditional masculine ideal (honor found in violence and aggression) and with a more feminized form of resistance.

I totally agree with this. He really takes on the spirit of...I don't want to say "the cause" because that sounds ridiculous, but he's like a wonderful role model for everyone, despite being an outsider, and I think that mirrors I lot of ideals about love and diversity.

I personally think this is why the show continues to have such a captivated fandom. Most other fandoms are (from what I've seen), based upon shipping. There is, of course, a lot of shipping in DW nowadays, but it doesn't really come from the source material. I think everyone's a bit in love with the idea of the Doctor and the Doctor is all about being renegade and outcast and still being brilliant.

Yeah, definitely. I love that the Doctor is a queer figure who is also a hero--that he's often fighting the forces of conformity. Of course, not without the cost of sometimes having to become like them--we've seen that in the new series, at least (I haven't seen the old)--but the show has also been sure to explore those ramifications.

The Doctor is such a rich character to keep exploring, especially as he's been around for so long and so many writers and actors and fans have had the opportunity to interpret him in their own ways. There's so much there. I won't say I don't like to ship, at least in my fanfic, but when it comes to the show itself I'm also really interested in all the other thematic elements.
