What's your best advice on revisions?

Last week I wrote a 5600+ word short story about my first Artist's Date.  That was a few days ago.  I want to revise it, but I realized I haven't revised any of my creative writing since college (we're talking decades ago).  I really didn't have a method back then for making revisions.  I'd just leave my writing alone for a few days (weeks, if ( Read more... )

I approach it differently depending on the project, to be honest, but I do usually let it sit for a long while before coming back to it with fresh eyes ( ... )

Thanks for telling me how you handle revisions. I still don't feel ready to revisit my NaNo book, but I feel like trying to improve the draft of the short story I wrote last week. Maybe its because I only invested two days writing it (a few hours each day) or because of its shorter length that I don't feel like I need to let it sit very long before doing some revisions ( ... )

Cool, thanks! I went to add you to my beta filter, but then I realized I'd named it "Temp Beta" - I think maybe it was only for one specific project. I'll probably just post them to my writing filter then instead of an actual beta filter. But you're on that one already! I'm glad to help out however I can!

I hope you find flash challenges to be as fun and as helpful for you as they have been for me. There's actually a community I belong to but only participate in every now and then where I learned about this. You have *exactly* 90 mins to write AND submit your story. All stories are submitted anonymously, then everyone reads, crits, and votes on them. That's been really helpful for me, both getting feedback and having some encouragement by winning categories or "best flash" sometimes. The timetable/schedule on participating and voting is very strict though, and I just have so much going on right now that I can't commit to that at the moment.
