I'm going to be away for a number of days. All administrative, legal and procedural issues should be taken care of. Ken's in charge while I'm gone.
In case of emergency, you all know how to contact me.
[ / police filter ]It might be impossible to leave the City, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to get away from it all for

[Derek finished unloading the suitcases into the cabin, setting them all in the bedroom before coming back out to give the place a once over. It was small and quaint, nice and homey, just enough for the two of them for their week long getaway. They had both been so busy lately, this would do the pair of them some good to get away from work and everything else for a little bit.
He turned to Cameron.] Is it everything you dreamed of and more?

Well, it has a fireplace and you, so I'm going to go with yeah, it is.

I'll light the fireplace, yeah? Sooner we warm this place up the sooner you take that coat off.

You could do that, but then you'd have to let go of me. [ And her smile turns into a cheeky grin. ] And I will won't let you take any nude pictures of me.
[ But yes. Lighting the fireplace sounds like a good idea, actually. Still, she doesn't really want to move away from Derek. She puts her hand over his, the one on her cheek, turning her cheek into his palm. ]

Mornin', pretty girl.

She'd been looking at the fire for a while, rather lost in thought, but after a deep breath, she decides to just-- put it out there. ]
I'm thinking of leaving the police force.

Really? Why?

It's just-- I'm not really cut out for the job. I'm a lawyer, not a police officer. And yeah, I knew that going in, but it was never meant to go on for this long. I was a temporary solution. I want to try people, not put them in prison without a trial in a place that has no legal system to speak of.
[ And then, very quietly and with a calm that belies the anger she feels: ] People complain that the City's a police state, and the thing is, they're right. The police force is legislator, judicative and executive all in one. There's no division of power. And I figured, for the longest time, that it didn't matter so much, because someone had to do it and I was the best person for the job, but lately ( ... )

It's understandable. I mean you've done good while you've been in the position. But I get that it's stressful and not your thing.
[His thumb smooths up the arch of her foot.] You'd be doing better sticking to what you know though, you're right. I mean working on some kind of judicial system here could really help the force out.

Don't tell me I didn't warn you. [ She's no good at cooking. She never has been. And she'll hit Derek with a wooden spoon if he makes fun of her lack of cooking abilities, too. ]

I ever tell you about the time I burned a turkey... on Thanksgiving?

I'd like to mention that I warned you.

[He's trying really hard not to laugh as she leans back into him and he stares into that pan over her shoulder. It's kind of hard to discern what the burned substance in the pan was or should have become, but it is definitely burned to a crisp. How you burn eggs, he isn't sure, but she did it. And really, he's trying not to laugh, so he keeps talking.Well, my mom had to work on the morning of Thanksgiving and my oldest sister was traveling to get to Chicago by lunch time so that left me and Desi in charge of the turkey. I can cook but cooking a turkey was... different. Anyway apparently we forgot to push the start button on the timer. So we're sitting there playing cards waiting when my mom comes in and says something's burning. We look over at the oven and there's just a little smoke coming out of it. And the timer on the microwave has the number of hours we punched in on it but we never pushed start. So we ended up having barbecue that year... with stuffing and corn and rolls and cranberry sauce and all ( ... )
