Fantine had been up early on this bright October morning, excited as to the day before her. She had finished the clean-up from the dinner party, singing softly to herself as she washed and dried the dishes and put them away in the cupboard. After the kitchen was sparkling clean, she gathered together a picnic basket of cheese and wine. She would stop by the market on the way to the park, in order to get the freshest fruit she could.
Dressed in a soft green flowered muslin day dress, with a matching bonnet, and white slippers, she set off towards the park. At the market, she chose some red apples and green grapes, as well as some strawberries - although she was rather shocked to find them in season. Perhaps in the future they could grow strawberries all year round?
Carrying the basket over her arm, her eyes began to search for him as she reached the park. He had said that he would be here, but she knew from bitter experience that men were not always constant. Still, she had faith and trust that he would not let her down in this. He seemed too good to do such a thing to her.
