Take care of our girl.
The chief's words kept echoing in his head as Nathan made his way to the Grey Gull and Audrey. Nathan had every intention of making sure that she stay safe but it worried him that the Chief said it, because the chief would have known that. Which meant something really bad was coming. He pulled his jeep into a parking space and looked up above the bar to where Audrey lived. The worry about her was supplanted by the image of her small smile when he'd nervously asked if she'd been talking about dinner or breakfast with the pancakes. He hoped both.
It didn't take him long to climb the stares. The opened door into her apartment gave him pause but it wasn't really anything unusual, especially in a small town like Haven. Chill ran down his spine when she saw the broken vase and he drew his gun. "Audrey?" He raised his voice a bit and called for her again. When there was no answer he knew she wasn't there and he holstered his gun. That was when he saw Duke's necklace on the ground. "Duke." He bit out between his teeth and made a fist around the leather strap. He'd known that Duke hadn't changed despite Audrey's protestations, this just proved it. He would kill him if he'd down something to her.
Nathan left the room without a backward glance, anger in every line of his body. He was on a hunt, his attention focused that it took him a minute to realize that the bottom of the stairs was a cobblestone street rather than a paved sidewalk. His brow furrowed and he spun in place but the Grey Gull and Haven was gone. "That's new."
