So is it necessarily fair when you've had friends (that don't like your character) more or less literally say you shouldn't post about or defend your favorite character on a fandom forum because you're the only one who cares and your view on the character isn't canon and apparently isn't worth hearing?

Because this has happened to me multiple times ( Read more... )

In this case I don't think you're overreacting so much as you have a shitty friend. :/ They don't have to agree with your view of the character or like the character, but they do have to respect your opinions. And it's not their place to tell you what you should and shouldn't post on a forum or to play Canon Police.

That annoys me, too. Just because your opinion isn't the majority doesn't mean it isn't a valid opinion. And how the hell is their view "canon"? Have they spoken with the creator personally to see if that's how they should interpret it?

I have a tendency to be...obsessive...about characters I like that everyone else hates. So I get a lot of "SHUT UP ALREADY" as well.

MechaTalk in general. I do avoid them most of the time, but every so often I kind of want to poke back in but then I get the hate. Certain members were even saying on my Facebook that I shouldn't post my essay there when I was debating it because oh noez no1curr and anything pondering Ghinius being deeper than a 1-dimensional monster would be at risk for causing drama (which they kind of acted like would be my fault instead of people causing drama over something as silly as an essay about a character they don't like).

I dunno, I just don't think it's fair even if no one cares...

I've had this before... not with shitty friends, but with fandom gurus in threads and comms.

I wasn't allowed to find Rock Lee attractive or have a different take on his character or enjoy any pairings with him in them 'cause it's not canon the way their pairings were (apparently Sasuke/Naruto is canon). I had to justify all of that--what I liked--in a way they personally found palatable.
