So is it necessarily fair when you've had friends (that don't like your character) more or less literally say you shouldn't post about or defend your favorite character on a fandom forum because you're the only one who cares and your view on the character isn't canon and apparently isn't worth hearing?

Because this has happened to me multiple times ( Read more... )

You know, I've sort of had this happen recently with Corpse Party (Awsome game that everyone with a PSP and PSN account should download. Like, right now). I joined Xseed's forums so that if I ever had trouble with the game, I'd be able to ask. Instead, I've ended up involved in a lot of discussions with other fans. My favorite character is Satoshi. Out of all the main characters, my least favorite is probably Ayumi. I don't exactly hate her and think those who like her are stupid for it, she just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. There's another member of the forum who adores Ayumi, and thought Satoshi was kind of boring. I like to tease him (her?) about how Ayumi sucks. I'm just teasing him and I'm pretty sure he knows I'm just teasing. But that's not the point here. The point is, after re-playing Chapter 1, he decided that he hated another character, Naomi. Over at the poll for favorite side-characters, my favorite side character, Kurosaki, is currently number 1. Fans of the current second place character, Naho, aren't happy. Some of ( ... )

It's not even debates in my case. It's trying to have any discussion about this character other than RAWR HE SUCKS HE'S 1-DIMENSIONAL HE'S THE WORST CHARACTER IN THE SHOW HE'S A COMPLETE MONSTER REHJGBIWERFHU!11! I don't agree with that assessment at all, but because everyone else thinks like that the majority rules.

My friends say I shouldn't post because no one cares and it's true, but I still don't think I should be punished and not allowed to do things other people can just because I happen to like an unpopular character.

That... sounds both annoying and boring. Why should you not be able to discuss/analyze a character you enjoy just because they don't like them? Can't those bashers find something more productive to do with their time?

For example, I didn't care all that much for Naru from Love Hina. A couple years ago, I read a defense for her on this very comm. While I still wouldn't call her my favorite character, if I ever get back to reading Love Hina, I'll be able to appreciate her character better. Character discussion can be a beautiful thing when different opinions are brought to the table.

Because I'm literally the only fan the character has on most forums and the majority doesn't want to hear about characters they don't like or think deserve the time of day. It's annoying but it's life for me.
