As I recall, Watari deleting the data didn't stop the message that L was dead from being sent to Whammy's House. Considering Light was pretending to be L at that point, it gives Near a distinct advantage in starting up his own investigation.
Also, the interim in both the manga and anime states that after Near took up the case, he gathered up all the XX years of data on the Kira case before fully beginning his investigation.
All of this is beside the point, of course. What these people are really complaining about is Light becoming stupider in the second half of the manga. I agree with that, but don't take it out on Near.
I thought Light becoming stupider and crazier in the second half was intentional. He kinda lost something when he killed L; it was even showcased in an OAV where he goes into a random fit of insanity while at L's grave. Which is why I think that he would've screwed himself over in the end even if Near and Mello didn't interfere.
I really can't believe that. The only thing Light lost when he killed L was a huge pain in the ass. Throughout the series he was clearly irritated at having to think up so many elaborate plots just to get L off his back. This is clearly evident when Mello and Near showcase themselves, as his reaction is one of "Not this shit again."
Plus, I'm *really* not going to take it seriously if the anime added in something about it. This is the same anime team that took out the specifics of Light's plan to manipulate Rem into killing L and Watari in order to add in a yaoi fanservice scene. I call bullshit.
Thank goodness there's a decent amount of Near fans/cosplayers so it can't be that bad. Near even gets paired up with Mello.
Well, Light IS wrong. Well, actually...the point of Death Note is probably "Why do we kill people who kill people who kill people?" but the audience does get to sympathise with Light and/or L, but Near, not as much.
Near can't be blamed for the Idiot Plot that was plaguing the Near arc in general. Only thing we can really blame him for is claiming him + Mello surpasses L. For starters, Mello's interference would have easily been dealt with had Light AND Mikami not been victims of Idiot Plot Disease. Really, Mikami wasn't told and didn't figure that individual pieces of the DN are just what's needed--but figuring that much out is quite plausible when he was on an order to send 5 pages of the DN to Takada then fake personally killing the criminals via those 5 pages. Really, it was too much trouble to not have emergency paper with Mello out there, a criminal to be sure but still alive and having proven himself in the past to be a downright big-time nuisance to Light AND Near (wow, they actually have something in common: issues with Mello). It's like
( ... )
*iz late* The reason I've found a lot of people dislike Near is Matsuda's suspicion at the end of the manga, because OMG OUR WOOBIES LIGHT + MIKAMI ...

I think it's because there's a large amount of people who think Light can do no wrong. *eyeroll*
