As I recall, Watari deleting the data didn't stop the message that L was dead from being sent to Whammy's House. Considering Light was pretending to be L at that point, it gives Near a distinct advantage in starting up his own investigation.

Also, the interim in both the manga and anime states that after Near took up the case, he gathered up all the XX years of data on the Kira case before fully beginning his investigation.

All of this is beside the point, of course. What these people are really complaining about is Light becoming stupider in the second half of the manga. I agree with that, but don't take it out on Near.

Sorry, I've only completed the anime series and I'm on vol. 3 of the manga. I hope I didn't mess the defense or something.

I thought Light becoming stupider and crazier in the second half was intentional. He kinda lost something when he killed L; it was even showcased in an OAV where he goes into a random fit of insanity while at L's grave. Which is why I think that he would've screwed himself over in the end even if Near and Mello didn't interfere.

I really can't believe that. The only thing Light lost when he killed L was a huge pain in the ass. Throughout the series he was clearly irritated at having to think up so many elaborate plots just to get L off his back. This is clearly evident when Mello and Near showcase themselves, as his reaction is one of "Not this shit again."

Plus, I'm *really* not going to take it seriously if the anime added in something about it. This is the same anime team that took out the specifics of Light's plan to manipulate Rem into killing L and Watari in order to add in a yaoi fanservice scene. I call bullshit.

Then I guess he couldn't handle the pressure of TWO pains in the ass, which is why he snapped so much in the second half.

And wow, you're almost making me think that you don't like the anime.
