I'm not as familiar with the FFX fandom, but I've definitely been exposed to Aerith hate from fellow FF7 fans, and for the life of me, I DON'T GET IT AT ALL. What's so horrible about her?! I will admit sometimes it annoys me when characters get guys to cross-dress, but hey, Aerith had a good reason for that, and it was terribly amusing to see Cloud in drag. XD Aerith is clever, crafty, sweet, kind, and the right kind of self-sacrificing, as you pointed out. She deserves more love!
I loved Aerith. To be honest, I'd heard so much shit about her from FF7 fans that I'd gone into the game expecting to hate her and was quite surprised when she wasn't anything like the way a lot of fans portrayed her.
(My sister was in the room while I was playing through the Wall Market segment and she thought that part was a riot and stated that all games should have mandatory cross-dressing sidequests. XD)
Aerith isn't some perfect angel, and that's what makes her so great. She's got spunk and a mischievous side. Are these fanbrats forgetting how she pissed Barret off at the Gold Saucer by being rather insensitive?
They might have, because I don't quite remember. XD Aerith's mischievous streak is definitely amusing. Even though it was necessary to make Cloud cross-dress to get into the house, I don't doubt that she was having a lot of fun with it! XD And yay for spunk! I think she has just the right amount of it, only using it when it's important and not using it when it's, well, not.
She made some comment about Dyne, as I recall, that ended up with him getting mad and storming out. I don't remember exactly what she said, though.
I loved the cross-dressing bit because it was so obvious that she was getting a kick out of it. XD And I agree on her having just the right amount of spunk-- she's not in-your-face with it like some other characters are.
Word, word, word. Feminine =/= bad, and the healer thing is just ridiculous in the later FF games (except IX) because anyone can be anything. I always took Yuna along Auron's path and made Lulu and Kimahri healers, myself. Made for some kickass aeons. Personally, I don't really see the Fran = feminist connection... I'd actually always thought Ashe was the most feminist character in XII, ridiculous skirt thing aside.
I could wrote a long and detailed answer explaining how much I agree with you and how much the beahviour of some fanbrats annoys me... But I'm just lazy and you have said the essential, so...A poor little "WORD, WORD, WORD, OH F... WORD!" is enough? ^__^
The idea that traditional femininity - spiritual/heart strength, being the gatherer/healer and all that - is somehow lesser that traditional masculinity is just utter bunkus maximus.
Who the heck do you think invented medicine!? XD The freakin' gatherers! Ahem.
Even in cultures where the woman's sphere is home and the man's is work, oh, you do not swagger in expecting wifey to just give you carte blanche. She will tell you to sit down and hush up. Her sphere may be 'just' the home, but she is the DEITY there. It's not uncommon for the husband to get an 'allowance', and for the wife to do all the finance stuff. Once the money's in the home it's within her sphere so she deals with it. XD
*runs tagents manically*
Being girlie is just as valid as being tomboyish, whether you're a chick or a dude. XD
