You have no IDEA how happy I am to find a community like this. This has totally made my morning (and I have
zannechaos for pointing the way). ^^
Since it seems to be the general thing to post our list of the characters others like to hate... (
Here goes nothing! )

Not to mention the absolutely insane way that her bashers go after people who write Relena/Heero stories (and yes, I speak from experience here). Another one I'd add to the list is Sally Po, also from GWing. She's not widely hated, but you just try writing a Sally/Wufei story and then try to fend off all the people who go on and on (and ON) about Wufei/Meiran. For the love of god people, she's _dead_ already!

As for Sally/Wufei vs. Wufei/Meiran...well I guess there's no such thing as moving on and marrying someone else, hmm? Or maybe they're holding out for Meiran to be brought back from the dead? :P

Hm. Well, she might be a murderer (and, like most characters in GW, she's certainly a killer), and I'm sure it would be possible for someone to put together a decent case for her having antisocial personality disorder -- but to me, that's not the point. Not when the issue is bashing, in any case.
I dislike character bashing because it reduces rounded characters to stereotypes, and/or presents characters as sums of their negative characteristics only. Obviously, I make an exception for good-natured humour/parody fanfiction, but in general, if a character is portrayed as three-dimensional in the source, I don't want to read stories by people who refuse to view them as such ( ... )

I agree. Taking away all of a character's flaws is as much of a disservice as taking away all of their redeeming qualities. A good character has a rounded balance of both. Too many writers skip over that part when they start writing.
I've read fics where the author put their favorite characters up on a pedestal, and it's disturbing. I wouldn't go as far as to consider them bashfics, but the concept almost twists back onto itself so that it almost is bashing, in a way.
I'm the same as you: I prefer fics where the portrayal of a character is true to form and, as you said, respects the character. It's what I strive for in my own writing, though I don't know if I'm always successful. ^^;;;

My rebuttal to the whole 'she smacks of a Mary Sue' argument is that of COURSE her celestial warriors are going to fall in love with her--it's their destiny to protect her! It's pretty hard to care that much for someone and not have love for them. Plus, she cares unconditionally for all of them in return...in other words, she gets back what she gives.

But I agree with you. She seems to be, by all appearances, rather level-headed and rational for someone her age, so it kind of defies logic why she'd bother being so obsessed with learning more about Heero as she is for the first few episodes. I think she chases after him because he intrigues her, at first; after all, she grew up in a world where everyone scuffled to be first in line to greet her, then here comes this boy who won't even look at her. Think of it as sort of living in a world where the only fruit you ever got to eat was watermelon, then all of the sudden, someone walked past your house eating an orange. You'd want to know more about that fruit, because it's something different. I think it's the same concept.
Interestingly enough, after Relena does return to the Sanq Kingdom, she puts her Heero-chasing days ( ... )
