I was doing research for my WIP Book of Shadows (Yes, I’m working on it, just finished the 4th scene of planned 6, which for me this soon after an update is pretty damn good. It's why I'm behind on my f-list reading among other things to take advantage of a spurt of writing while I can). Well, I was looking up Hufflepuffs trying to learn whether it

One thing I know for sure, so you need not fret and I need not fret for your Book of Shadows is that Snape cannot possibly turn out evil. It is not possible after all the hints in the HBP (which made you interested in fanfiction) and not possible in the large view of the HP series. Snape is always doubted and always judged wrongly.

And I know--as I've said before, I was no fan of Snape before HBP. HBP is what convinced me he's a hero. If after those hints he's not good, then Rowling truly is a failure as a writer, whatever her millions, with no sense of dramatic structure, no ability to develop complex characters, and a cheat.
But it's getting closer and closer to release date, so suddenly I'm wondering--what if I'm wrong?

Still ~wibbling~ Maybe I'm trying to convince myself his being evil is the worse because I've been so sure ever since HBP not only that he's good but doomed.
Preparing for the worse...

I agree--even before I became a fan of Snape the one thing I didn't much like about HP was the relenting Gryffindor-centricity. The flatness that all Gryffindors are true and all Slytherins evil.
Well, we certainly found out Gryffindors can be evil--look at Pettigrew (though I hear some try to deny that just because he was a Marauder he was a Gryffindor but I think that's ridiculous)
If Snape is evil, the message sent is this:
1) Your fate is written at eleven-years-old if someone could look into your soul.
2) You can tell someone is a villain by looking at them--just look for the hooked nose and greasy hair.
3) It's OK to be bigoted--you're right to believe they are all alike ( ... )

I have a T-shirt saying "Snape is good - dammit" which I wear a lot these days. Hopefully I will still have cause to wear it after the 21st. Otherwise I will have to add the post-script "JKR was wrong!"
PS. So happy to hear you are working on BoS. I have not read your latest chapter yet, as work has kept me busy and I want to have time to read the last couple of chapters in a row. It is such a fantastic story, so I'm glad to hear you are still inspired...

But if Snape is evil...
I'm dreading more than feeling excited about the next and last book. In two years I've gone from someone who didn't even like Snape or read any of the HP books more than once to someone who just cares far too damn much about a fictional character--but that's what I get for reading Snape's much more appealing and complex than any Rowling could have imagined than making the character my own.

So I'm not wibbling at all about that.
On the other hand, I confess I'm dreading his death. As you say, I'm caring far too damn much about a *fictional* character. But then it's an extraordinary character.
On the days when I feel very optimistic, I try to convince myself that Rowling won't kill him precisely because everyone expects her to. It would be so much more elegant to find a solution where he survives.
I also wanted to tell you that I love Book of Shadows, though I'm a lazy/shy reviewer, and I'm really looking forward to more of it - and I don't care if it becomes AU.
By the way, I have friended you - I hope that's all right.

And it's OK--I'm often a shy reviewer too--especially with "old stories" long ago posted. Thanks for letting me know you've enjoyed it--and you're more than welcome to friend.
