It's gonna be a fun weekend...

We have a state of emergency for Hanna and we're under a tropical storm warning. Joy.
I just hope I'm not driving in that crap tomorrow.
We shouldn't get much out of it besides excessive rain...unless Ike follows right behind it.
Here'e current projected path.
...And here's the projected path for Ike, who is still a category 3 ( Read more... )

Yeah, I saw something about the potential for that.
Just be prepared--pick up anything outside that might be a potential projectile from outside, have flashlight batteries, water and munchies. If you're in a lowlying area, move valuables up as high as possible (just in case) and stay with friends on higher ground or a shelter. You'll be fine.
*hugs*
We're used to tropical storms here. I can't even tell you how many I've been through. They're not as scary as the weather channel makes them sound. Just be smart and all will be well.

Yeah, definitely not the best place to be, so definitely take precautions.

If it makes you feel better though, even central Virginia is only expecting minor flooding and 35-9 mph winds with higher gusts...AND you have at least a couple more days to prepare.

Don't ask me how I managed to do it, but you can string those 5-day forecast maps together and animate them. The successive error cones, or areas of probability, wags quite a lot!

Hope all goes well...

Oh yeah--As they get further away from where the storm is at any point, they get much less accurate. Once it gets within 24 hours or so, you can pretty much be sure you're gonna get something. But one little wobble can mean a big difference in what exactly you get.
Looks like with Hanna we'll get anywhere from 40-70 mph winds with higher gusts, no big deal.
At the moment, Ike looks more likely to hit FL, Cuba and/or the gulf...which is just sad...but this point, who knows?

Yep, I'm a hurricane geek.

I grew up in earthquake country, which isn't comparable. My Dad, who has experienced both tornadoes and quakes, says the former are worse because they play cat and mouse with you. Earthquakes just hit, and then your nerves get jangled by aftershocks. There's no telling where tornadoes shall hit with any precision. There is some telling where hurricanes shall make landfall, which is why you're a hurricane geek.

I've had one experience with a very small earthquake...It was disconcerting.
Tornadoes scare the hell out of me...especially since that one nearly hit my house awhile back.
*shiver*
I still twitch every time there's a tornado watch/warning.

I agree on hurricanes--Not only can you tell vaguely where they may hit but you usually have 2-3 days to get the hell out if it's a big one. I can handle that...unpredictable, sudden disasters are a whole different thing.
