the accidental gardener

A couple of months ago Trowa and I accompanied thespian to a workshop on container gardening. It seemed like a fun idea, but I hadn't managed to follow through...until now. On Sunday I procured several mystery tomato and squash seedlings from someone in JP who was removing volunteers from her compost bed, and this afternoon I went to the garden center at ( Read more... )

w00t! There's nothing like eating things that you grew in your own garden.

Last year I had a huge mint plant that took over about a third of my garden (I have about 10 sq ft in the backyard). This year I turned over all my soil a couple of times when I mixed in various organic fertilizer-type things (last year I added cow manure; this year I added peat compost and shellfish compost). I pulled up a lot of mint in the process -- I was quite aggressive about that and worried that I'd killed it... but no, its runners were alive and well all around the edges and I now have more mint than I know what to do with, and it's not even summer yet!

hmmm. maybe I should make mint ice cream. mmmmmm.

I was just going to say, make sure to put the mint in a separate pot. Mint is kind of a weed in the way that it grows. It takes over EVERYTHING.

Yes, I have a separate pot for the mint. :) I'll plant the others in the long, rectangular planter I bought today.

If the mint pot has a hole in the bottom, keep an eye on it! Seriously, that stuff will take over the neighborhood.

Good luck!!

Oh, hmm, I hadn't considered the watering needs of the herbs. I saw that they all like full sun, and I thought I could plant them all (except the mint) in the long, rectangular planter I'd bought. So I shouldn't do that, then? I'd better do a little research ( ... )
